Even an NBA Championship and a chance to continue to tutor under one of the game?s most legendary coaches don?t seem to be enough to keep the Detroit Pistons? coaching staff filled.

On the heels of winning his first NBA title, Pistons Head Coach Larry Brown has already lost three assistant coaches from his staff of six, and one more might be on the way out the door.

Lead assistant coach Mike Woodson is expected to accept a four year contract any day now to become the Atlanta Hawks? head coach. Woodson was a finalist for the Sixers? head coaching job last year after Brown resigned to take the Pistons position. He has also interviewed with the Toronto Raptors this offseason and last, with Sam Mitchell replacing Kevin O?Neill in that position this summer. A former player, Woodson has been an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia and Detroit. He will replace Terry Stotts, who was fired in Atlanta after a year and a half at the helm.

Second assistant coach John Kuester resigned last week to accept a job as the second assistant to New Jersey Nets Head Coach Lawrence Frank. Kuester, who, like Woodson, was an assistant under Brown in Philadelphia, has also served on the Boston Celtics? staff in the past. He was looking to get closer to his roots out east, as his family still lives in Philadelphia.

Herb Brown, a former Pistons head coach and Larry?s brother, will be leaving to join Woodson?s staff in Atlanta. Brown has also served as an assistant coach to his brother in Philadelphia and Indiana, but most recently served as an assistant on Maurice Cheeks? staff in Portland. Cheeks, like Woodson, was a former Brown lead assistant coach.

Pat Sullivan, the Pistons? head video coordinator and a part-time assistant coach, is said to be strongly considering making the move to Atlanta as well. He is currently working with Detroit?s summer league team in Minneapolis, where the Pistons beat the Milwaukee Bucks yesterday 74-58.

Remaining on Brown?s staff are third assistant Dave Hanners, who has moved up to the number one seat and is the head coach of the summer league team, and Igor Koskoskov, the Serbian native and developmental mentor to Darko Milicic. Kokoskov is spending the summer working with the Serbian Olympic team.

Candidates to fill the vacancies on Brown?s staff include Garfield Heard, a former Pistons assistant to Alvin Gentry and a Brown disciple who has served as a Dallas Mavericks assistant and interim head coach, Pacers assistant coach, Sixers assistant coach, Washington Wizards head coach and Atlanta Hawks assistant coach but has been out of basketball for two years; Randy Ayers, Brown?s lead assistant with the Sixers who replaced him last summer but was fired halfway through the season and is currently out of basketball; Bob Bender, a former Sixers assistant coach to Brown, Ayers and Ayers? replacement, Chris Ford, and specialized in player development but was fired by incoming head coach Jim O?Brien last month; and current Pistons advance scout Brendan O?Connor, who served as a part-time practice assistant coach on Rick Carlisle?s Detroit staff in addition to his scouting duties.
