The discussion of Josh Smith's long-term future with the Hawks is being tabled until next summer, when the fourth-year forward will be a restricted free agent, according to his agents.

Brian Dyke and Wallace Prather, Smith's agents, met with Hawks management Monday to discuss a contract extension but exited the meeting firm in their plans to have Smith play out the season and revisit the discussion.

"We've decided it's best to play the year out and see what transpires next summer," Dyke said. "There are several issues that come into play when you're making a long-term decision like this. We have to weigh all those things before we do anything."

Both sides have had months to come to an agreement. With the league's Oct. 31 deadline to complete contract extensions just days away, however, it appears there won't be any agreement reached.

"At this point let's just say negotiations have stopped," Prather said. "They made their one offer in July, we didn't agree with it, and they really haven't shown any interest in doing anything else."
