Rick Carlisle is the first person to interview for the vacant Mavericks' coaching position, Marc Stein of ESPN.com is reporting.

Carlisle met with Donnie Walsh, with sources telling ESPN.com that Mavs' owner Mark Cuban was not scheduled to participate in Carlisle's first interview for the job.

According to the report, the Mavericks would also like to interview Jeff Van Gundy, who to date has said he was not interested in returning to coaching this season.

ESPN.com reported Thursday that Donnie Nelson was Cuban's first choice to succeed Avery Johnson as coach, but club sources say Nelson does not want to leave his personnel post and Cuban will not try to force Nelson to reconsider.
