Brandon Roy was given the Magic Johnson Award on Thursday, voted upon by the Pro Basketball Writers Association.

The Magic Johnson Award was established in 2001 to recognize the player who best combines excellence on the court with cooperation with the media and fans. He beat out finalists Pau Gasol of the Lakers, Danny Granger of Indiana and Chris Bosh of Toronto. Last year, Roy was a finalist but the Lakers' Derek Fisher won.

"We are very proud to have Brandon join a group of outstanding previous winners of the Magic Johnson Award," said Doug Smith, president of the PBWA. "As one of the young generation of NBA stars, his ability and willingness to meet the ever-increasing demands of the media with honesty, consistency and respect for the needs of writers and broadcasters - and by extension the fans - makes him a very worthy addition to an impressive list of former winners."
