Stan Van Gundy claims he was prepared to relinquish front office duties to focus exclusively as head coach to remain with the Detroit Pistons.

The Pistons still parted ways with Van Gundy on Monday.

“When it came down to this, I was perfectly willing to only go in one role and to give up the front office and go into coaching,” Van Gundy said. “I didn’t fight to hang on to that at all. I was more than willing to just move over into the other role.”

Van Gundy said he was looking to try to complete the turnaround in his final season, looking for a full training camp to work with a healthy Reggie Jackson and Blake Griffin and push forward with a trio that included Andre Drummond.
