Hendu Helps Hawks Rebound, Snap Losing Streak

Nov 27, 2002 12:16 AM

He says he hadn?t put up numbers like he did tonight since college, and the much maligned forward turned center Alan Henderson was right on the money. In fact, he was right on the money all night against the Seattle Supersonics, leading the Hawks attack on the glass (55-32 rebounding edge) en route to a 119-116 win in OT.

RealGM's Jason Walker recaps the game and gets all the notes and quotes from tonight's thriller.

Hawks Take a Step Back

Nov 23, 2002 11:26 PM

It has become clear that the Hawks have a ways to go before they can make good on their infamous playoff guarantee. No one event or incident can validate that claim more than Saturday night?s 109-99 beating at the hands of the Boston Celtics.

RealGM's Jason Walker was there and has the recap and reaction from the game.

Hawks fail to close out pesky Celts

Nov 23, 2002 11:26 AM

The Hawks learned something about winning on the road Friday night. They learned that they better show more toughness.

"They turned it up," Glenn Robinson said of the Boston Celtics.

"They played much more physically," Shareef Abdur-Rahim noted, "and the refs were going to call it. They were going to make us decide it."

That is exactly what these two teams will do again tonight in Philips Arena. The Hawks, who played poorly on Wednesday and were routed, now must deal with the disappointment of being beaten 105-98 in double overtime after building a 13-point lead with 8:47 to play. They led by 11 with 5:26 left.

Hawks sign Maloney

Nov 22, 2002 8:37 AM

On Wednesday, the Atlanta Hawks signed guard Matt Maloney to take the place of rookie guard Dan Dickau, who went on the injured list with a slight cartilage tear in his left knee.

A five-year veteran, Maloney did not play in the NBA last season and last played for the Hawks during the 2000-01 campaign. He saw action in 55 games that year, averaging 6.7 ppg and 2.8 apg, shooting 42.0-percent from the field.

In 281 career games, Maloney has posted 7.7 points and 3.0 assists per game.

Dickau out, Maloney in

Nov 21, 2002 7:02 AM

Jeffrey Denberg of the AJC reports: Atlanta Hawks rookie point guard Dan Dickau will miss the next six weeks after arthroscopic surgery Wednesday for a cartilage tear in his left knee.

Dickau played nine minutes in Monday's victory over Toronto and appeared to work without difficulty, but coach Lon Kruger said he had experienced discomfort in his knee since the start of training camp. In six games, Dickau averaged 1.7 points and 0.8 rebounds.

Dickau will be replaced almost immediately, Kruger said. The Hawks hope that Matt Maloney, who played with them in 2000-01, will join them today in time to make the trip to Boston.

?Timid? Second Quarter Dooms Hawks

Nov 21, 2002 12:18 AM

There is an adage among players and coaches in the NBA.

Any given night, on any floor, any team can beat you.

Tonight, on the Philips Arena floor, the Minnesota Timberwolves did just that to the Atlanta Hawks, behind a 33-12 second quarter that saw a complete disintegration of the Hawks offense and defense.

Jason Walker brings the recap plus an injury update on Dan Dickau and the man who may replace him...

It's a Blowout! Hawks Destroy Raptors

Nov 19, 2002 12:11 AM

As a fan, there is no better feeling than watching as your team dominates another, leaving little of the game?s outcome in doubt at any point.

One or two games every year, even the lowest of teams throws a bone to their loyal watchers, and completely levels the other team.

Tonight, against a team that the Hawks hadn?t beaten in six tries, the Raptors, the home team did just that.

Jason Walker provides the recap, plus some "Quotes and Notes" from the game.

Ratliff Dominates Hornets

Nov 17, 2002 12:19 AM

If there is anyone who still doesn?t believe that Theo Ratliff makes a difference in the way the Hawks play, then they simply aren?t watching.

Tonight, in front of a packed house split between Hawks fans and quite a few ?Who Dat? New Orleans fans, Ratliff made a huge defensive statement and carried the Hawks to an 89-82 triumph over the visiting Hornets.

Jason Walker has a Game Recap plus some Quick Notes inside the article.

Big Win In LA Ends Trip With Style

Nov 13, 2002 2:51 AM

Jeff Denberg of the AJC writes that Shareef Abdur-Rahim made only one basket in the second half of a 26-point performance Tuesday, but it was a critical corner jumper. When Glenn Robinson backed him with another, the Hawks were able to hold on against the Los Angeles Lakers and beat them 95-83.

That left them at 2-3 on trip, 4-4 for the season and going home with some satisfaction.

The three-time defending champion Lakers, still without injured center Shaquille O'Neal, dropped to 2-6, their worst start through eight games in 36 years. Their losing streak grew to four games, their longest since April 1995.

Turnovers plague Terry in loss to Kings

Nov 11, 2002 10:07 AM

The Hawks got some good news Sunday night. They won't see Shaquille O'Neal on the court Tuesday in Los Angeles -- the big fellow's foot is hurting.

"I wasn't looking forward to trying to push him around with this hip," Hawks center Theo Ratliff said, a reference to his surgery of a year ago.

But that was the only triumph the Hawks enjoyed Sunday night. They rallied repeatedly against Sacramento but were undone once again by too many turnovers and too many bad shots by Glenn Robinson and Jason Terry, who were a combined 10-for-30. In addition, the two committed 13 of the Hawks' 21 turnovers in a 105-97 loss.
