Durant's Buzzer Beating 3 Sinks Hawks In 2OT

Nov 17, 2007 3:45 AM

Kevin Durant made a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of the second overtime, and Damien Wilkins scored a career-high 41 points in the Seattle SuperSonics' 126-123 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night.

With rookie Al Horford guarding him at the top of the key, Durant pumped once to get the defender in the air before shooting over his outstretched arm.

"Al Horford was right on it, but I faded away and fortunately it went in," Durant said. "I'm starting to get used to playing every other night or so, and I'm gaining confidence with my game."

Durant, the No. 2 overall draft pick, finished with 21 points to help Seattle improve to 2-8 following a victory on Wednesday night at Miami.

Joe Johnson had a season-high 39 points for the Hawks, who have lost three of four.

Hawks Lose Smith, Law To Injuries But Beat Cats

Nov 15, 2007 2:42 AM

The Atlanta Hawks might have won the game against the Charlotte Bobcats Wednesday night, but they lost two starters.

Josh Smith, who had 15 points and five blocks, strained his left quad early in the third quarter and did not return. The Hawks also lost rookie point guard Acie Law with a left ankle sprain with 6:47 left in the third period. He had two points and six assists. Both did not return.

"We have to evaluate them overnight and see where we are. We have to mix and match right now until we see what our injuries are. I won't know that until tomorrow," Atlanta Coach Mike Woodson said.

"We'll have an MRI tomorrow morning. I don't think it's really that bad," said Smith. "I don't take that long to heal."

Hawks' Smith Denies Fighting With Lue, Woodson

Nov 13, 2007 5:00 PM

During each of his previous three seasons, Hawks' forward Josh Smith said he has had the displeasure of having his name and reputation trashed in published reports.

He only had to wait six games for it to happen during his fourth year.

Smith was on the receiving end of a Detroit News' report that detailed his involvement in a shouting match with Hawks' coach Mike Woodson and veteran Hawks' point guard Tyronn Lue during the Hawks' 92-91 loss to the Pistons two weeks ago, an altercation all involved said never happened.

"It's a lie," Smith said of the report that had him yelling at Lue to pass him the ball and then yelling at Woodson to "get Lue out of the game" and later having to be "restrained by coaches and teammates."

"I'm just tired of all these false accusations about me being thrown out there," Smith continued Monday. "Where is all this stuff coming from? Because it seems obvious to me that someone out there has an agenda against me. If I'm going to get in trouble, at least let me get in trouble for something I've actually done."

Celtics Remain NBA's Only Unbeaten Team

Nov 10, 2007 1:44 AM

The Celtics are still making history. It's the good kind for a change.

Boston is off to its best start in 20 years after beating the Atlanta Hawks 106-83 Friday night behind another superb all-around game by Kevin Garnett.

The 10-time All-Star but first-year Celtic had 27 points, 19 rebounds, six assists and three blocks against a young and improving Atlanta team. Boston is much older but has improved more since posting the second worst record in the franchise's impressive history last season.

Hawks' Strong Rebounding Secures Win Over Suns

Nov 7, 2007 10:26 PM

Josh Smith scored 22 points, rookie Al Horford (15rebs) led a dominant performance on the boards and the Hawks beat another 60-win team from last season, holding off Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns 105-96 on Wednesday night.

Atlanta, which hasn't made the playoffs since 1999, got back to .500 in a brutal opening stretch of games and added to its opening-night win over Dallas. Once again, the Hawks drew a sellout crowd to watch them beat a Western Conference powerhouse.

"The atmosphere here this year is incredible," said Marvin Williams, one of three Hawks to put up a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. "It really gives us a boost of confidence."

Hawks Get First Season-Opening Home Win Since '98

Nov 3, 2007 10:26 AM

The Atlanta Hawks' last playoff season began with their last season-opening win.

It's no wonder Joe Johnson and the Hawks placed so much emphasis on their 101-94 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night.

Atlanta opened with a win for the first time since the 1998-99 season, and the Hawks believe a strong start is needed to end their eight-year playoff drought, the longest active streak in the NBA.

Johnson scored 28 points to offset a 28-point effort by Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki, and the Hawks outscored the Mavericks 11-4 in the final three minutes to take the win.
