Dennis Schroder has been suspended one game by the Atlanta Hawks after returning late from the All-Star break.
Schroder told reporters Friday that he returned to his native Germany for the break but did not have a visa on his new passport. Schroder needed to go to Berlin to obtain a new one, causing him to miss Atlanta's practices Wednesday and Thursday.
"I replaced my passport and didn't realize that I had to put my new visa in there," he said, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "The Hawks organization and the NBA tried to get me as soon as possible a meeting with the consulate. We didn't make it in time. I'm sorry for me, my teammates and the organization."
The Hawks apparently were not satisfied with Schroder's explanation for his late return.
"Dennis has played an important role for our team and been a significant contributor to our success this season," Mike Budenholzer said in a statement. "We are disappointed that he did not return to the team on time and we have discussed this with him. We look forward to him rejoining the team in Orlando tomorrow night."
The Atlanta Hawks will sign Lamar Patterson and Ryan Kelly to contracts for the remainder of the season.
Patterson recently signed two 10-day contracts with the team. The last contract expired on Feb. 17, during the NBA All-Star break.
Kelly was with the Hawks during training camp but released before the regular season on Oct. 18. He was brought back and signed on Oct. 31. He was later waived on Jan. 6.
The Hawks had one open roster spot at the trade deadline after not immediately signing Patterson for the remainder of the season. They created a second open roster spot by trading Mike Scott to the Suns.
The Atlanta Hawks pursued trades for both Jimmy Butler and Paul George at the deadline.
Atlanta made aggressive offers built around a package of draft picks with more than three first rounders discussed. The Hawks own all of their own first round picks as well as future firsts from the Wolves and Cavs.
The Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls decided to keep Butler and George respectively.
The Hawks have been stuck between rebuilding and continuing to contend as they decided to keep Paul Millsap at the deadline.
The Atlanta Hawks traded Mike Scott to the Phoenix Suns.
The deal generated a $3.3 million traded player exception for the Hawks.
Scott has played sparingly this season. Scott missed the start of the season after undergoing several non-surgical procedures on this left knee.
The Philadelphia 76ers are finalizing a trade to send Ersan Ilyasova to the Atlanta Hawks for a second round picks, the right to swap on another and Tiago Splitter.
Splitter has struggled with injuries since the Hawks acquired him from the San Antonio Spurs in 2015.
For the 76ers, the move will free up minutes for Dario Saric.
The 76ers acquired Ilyasova from the Oklahoma City in October along with a first round pick in exchange for Jerami Grant.
The Atlanta Hawks have reiterated that Paul Millsap won't be traded before the deadline.
Millsap can become a free agent this offseason.
“He’s not going anywhere,” said Mike Budenholzer. “You can write that.”
The Hawks solicited potential offers for Millsap early last month as the team had a 16-16 record and appeared to be headed to a rebuild mode. A seven-game win streak brought trade talks to an end.
The Hawks informed teams that Millsap was no longer available. Millsap said he was informed by team management, including Budenholzer, that he would not be traded.
Millsap said Monday that he was relieved to know his immediate future with the latest acknowledgement.
“Bud has been a man of his word,” Millsap said. “He has always shot it straight with me, always been honest with me. I take his word for what it is. It’s refreshing to know I’m not going anywhere and I’ll be on this team until the end of the year.
“Now, I’ve got to make it work. Stick to basketball and try to get wins.”
The Atlanta Hawks do not appear interested in making a major roster move before the trade deadline, according to a source.
The Hawks appeared close to dealing Paul Millsap shortly after New Year's before pulling him from the market.
Atlanta has lost Al Horford, DeMarre Carroll, Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver via free agency and trade over the past two offseasons.
The Atlanta Hawks have signed guard/forward Lamar Patterson to a second 10-day contract.
Patterson was signed to his first 10-day contract on January 29, 2017.
Patterson has appeared in three games for the Hawks, averaging 2.0 points and 1.3 rebounds in 6.8 minutes.
