Cavs Intend To Use $14.5 Million Trade Exception

Apr 24, 2011 2:50 PM

Cavaliers GM Chris Grant hopes to be able to use the team's $14.5 million traded player exception before it expires on July 10.

"I'm hopeful," he said. "I'd like to use it. Certainly with (Cavs owner) Dan (Gilbert) and his support in the final process, it would be great to use it. We don't want to take on a bad contract. We don't want to put ourselves in a spot where we lose flexibility, but certainly we are hopeful and we are going to try to use it and maybe put it into play in the draft or a few days after the draft, too."

Grant explained the Cavs could actually accept $14.6 million in salary with the traded player exception.

"Any combination of players that are waived or traded can fit into that slot as long as they don't exceed ($14.6 million)," Grant said. "In a trade, you have to trade something, but you don't have to trade dollar and dollar like most trades. We can trade a second-round pick, the rights to a player, a first-round pick, any combination of those things. You can (trade) a player who makes $1 million (for) a player who makes $14 million. It opens up an array of possibilities. Certainly with the high picks, it opens even more possibilities."

Cavs Will Draft Best Available Player

Apr 19, 2011 10:32 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have two first round picks in the 2011 NBA Draft.

"Every year we know one thing: We know there's 10-15, 12-15 good players,” Cavs General Manager Chris Grant said. “Our job is to figure out who those guys are. Those are the marching orders we give our scouts: Go figure out who those guys are."

Grant said he and his staff will meet with coach Byron Scott and his staff to determine a course of action moving forward. Asked whether he anticipated drafting to fill a need or to acquire the best player available, Grant did not hesitate.

"My philosophy, best available," he said, "particularly when you're drafting high, you want to look for the best talent and human beings. The human being part is very important."

Apr 14, 2011 10:33 AM

The NBA has suspended Charlie Villanueva for five games for an altercation with Cavaliers center Ryan Hollins.

Villanueva not only initiated the altercation but escalated it when he had to be restrained on the court and near the loading dock.

Villanueva sprinted from the Pistons locker room in an attempt to get to the Cavaliers locker room, and was eventually led back to the Pistons locker room by several Detroit area police officers.

Villanueva, who makes $7 million this season, will forfeit $450,000 in salary.

Police Restrain Villanueva After Ejection For Fighting

Apr 12, 2011 2:28 AM

Charlie Villanueva had to be restrained by police in a loading dock area at The Palace of Auburn HIlls after being ejected Monday night during a 110-101 loss to Cleveland in the final home game of the season for the Pistons.

At one point, Villanueva left the Pistons locker room and raced toward the Cavaliers locker room in an attempt to confront Ryan Hollins, who was also ejected following the incident.

The incident happened with 5:47 left in the game, when Villanueva set a pick on Hollins and simultaneously swung his left fist toward Hollins’ groin area. The two locked up with each other, and each raked the other across the face before being separated.

After both were ejected, Villanueva tried to get at Hollins on the court, but was wrestled toward the tunnel by Rodney Stuckey and Pistons head of security Jerry Hendon.

Cavs See Derrick Williams As NBA Power Forward

Apr 10, 2011 2:21 PM

The player ranked No. 2 on most draft boards is Arizona’s Derrick Williams.

Most NBA teams, including the Cavaliers, view the 6-foot-8, 241-pound Williams as more of a power forward than a small forward at the next level. Teams question whether he’s quick enough to guard small forwards.

This poses somewhat of a problem for the Cavaliers, who have a logjam in the frontcourt with power forwards Anderson Varejao, J.J. Hickson, Antawn Jamison and Samardo Samuels already on the roster.

The Cavs are said to be high on North Carolina small forward Harrison Barnes, but the 6-8, 210-pounder is reportedly leaning towards a return to Chapel Hill.
