Rockets, Pelicans Interested In Hiring Tyronn Lue For Lead Assistant Job

May 28, 2019 10:03 AM

The Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans have pursued Tyronn Lue for a lead assistant role, but he remains focused on a return to the NBA in a head coaching role.

Lue was fired by the Cleveland Cavaliers in October of last year.

Lue was offered the Los Angeles Lakers' coaching job, but was unable to agree to contract terms.

The Rockets are working to add to their staff following the departures of assistant coaches Jeff Bzdelik, Mitch Vanya and Roy Rogers, player development assistant Irv Roland and video coordinator John Cho.

The Rockets offered Lue an assistant coaching job soon after he was fired in October.

Lue has history working with New Orleans head coach Alvin Gentry and executive Vice President David Griffin.

Koby Altman Initiated Cavaliers' Interest In Hiring John Beilein

May 23, 2019 10:12 AM

Koby Altman was the driving force behind the Cleveland Cavaliers' decision to hire John Beilein as head coach.

The Cavaliers have been connected to college coaches such as Tom Izzo and John Calipari in the past.

“This narrative that I drove this (Beilein hiring) is wrong,” said Dan Gilbert. “A few weeks ago, Koby brought up John to me. I obviously knew who he was, but I never met him.

"Koby put the bug in my ear, and I became very interested.”

Gilbert explained how Altman had a group of eight front office people meet with Beilin.

“All eight loved him," said Gilbert. "All eight wanted to hire him. They were polled individually. That caught my attention. This was a week before I met with John.”

Gilbert went to meet Beilein in Ann Arbor at his home on May 10th.

“I asked him, ‘If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?’” said Gilbert. “Most people say, ‘I’m a workaholic…I’m a perfectionist.’ They rarely admit to anything they really need to change.”

But Beilein told Gilbert, “I sometimes make things a little too complicated. I have too many plays.”

That endeared Beilein to Gilbert: “I appreciated that answer. It also shows self esteem.”

Dan Gilbert: Cavaliers 'Killed It' With Kyrie Irving Trade

May 23, 2019 9:38 AM

Dan Gilbert reflected back upon the Kyrie Irving trade in 2017 this week.

Irving requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers and they obliged despite him having two seasons remaining on his contract.

“It becomes a melting snowball,” said Gilbert. “We had to trade him when we did. What team would want Kyrie with only one year on his contract knowing he could leave after the season? You won’t get much back (under those circumstances).”

Gilbert also alluded to the possibility of Irving sitting out the 17-18 season.

“The agent was telling us, if we don’t trade him, there is some surgery he is on the borderline of having on his knee,” said Gilbert. “It was possible he could be out for most of the year. It turned out to be true.”

Irving missed the 2018 playoffs and the Boston Celtics had a disappointing 18-19.

“I don’t know, but I think Kyrie will leave Boston,” said Gilbert. “We could have ended up with nothing. Looking back after all the moves Koby (Altman) made, we killed it in that trade.”

Gilbert noted the Irving trade with Boston led to the Cavs adding Collin Sexton, Larry Nance Jr. and Jordan Clarkson.

Alvin Gentry Wore Lucky Tie From Cavaliers' Three Lottery Wins

May 15, 2019 9:13 AM

Alvin Gentry wore the same black tie with silver-gray striping that the Cleveland Cavaliers' representative in the draft lottery room wore when they won the lottery three times in four years.

Former vice chair of the Cavaliers Jeff Cohen had represented the team in the drawing room in those lotteries. Dan Gilbert and Cohen reportedly had a falling out and the Cavaliers have not had him in the room for either of the past two lotteries.

David Griffin had phoned Cohen and asked for a good luck charm in the lead-up to the lottery. Griffin asked Cohen to send the tie and it was passed along for Gentry to wear.

John Beilein Emerged As Cavs Favorite After Face To Face Meeting With Dan Gilbert

May 14, 2019 2:52 AM

John Beilein emerged as the favorite to fill the Cleveland Cavaliers head coaching vacancy after meeting in person with Dan Gilbert while Koby Altman interviewed candidates in Denver.

There had been mutual interest between the two sides months earlier, though Beilein never emerged as a top candidate due to the improbability that he would leave Michigan.

Beilein was reportedly intrigued by the young talent and fluidity of the Cavs roster.

"I love the position the team is in to build and grow and this was something I felt was the perfect fit for me. With hard work and dedication by all of us, we will grow this team day by day and reinforce a culture of success that sustains itself with strong core values,” said Beilein in a statement.

Financials terms of Beilein's contract have not been released.
