Warriors' San Francisco Arena Plans Meet New Opposition

Apr 29, 2015 11:59 AM

The Golden State Warriors' plans for a new arena in San Francisco are suddenly being met with opposition.

An anonymous group of what organizers describe as wealthy donors to UCSF hired an imposing cast of consultants — including former UCSF Senior Vice Chancellor Bruce Spaulding and, for a time, former Mayor Willie Brown to block the Warriors' plans for an arena in Mission Bay near the waterfront.

“This arena is going to essentially ruin decades of good work and planning in Mission Bay and make it impossible for people to access the hospital there,” said public relations pro Sam Singer, who has also been hired by the antiarena forces.

Along with the arena, the project would include two 160-foot-tall office buildings and a central plaza larger than Union Square.

The Warriors plan to build just 950 parking spaces for the project, 650 of which would serve the two office towers.

The opponents have formed Mission Bay Alliance, a nonprofit whose contributors are allowed to remain anonymous.

Report: Referee Would Have Called Foul On Curry Shot If He Had Missed

Apr 24, 2015 5:47 PM

Stephen Curry sent Game 3 into overtime with a game-tying three-pointer when Marreese Speights recovered Curry's previous attempt. Curry appeared to get fouled as he released the shot (Vine).

According to sources, referees explained that a foul would have been called if Curry had missed the three-point attempt. Curry would have then had to make all three free throws to extend the game.

The Golden State Warriors ultimately won the game in overtime.

The NBA said that while a foul should have been called on Anthony Davis, referees also missed a travel by Curry on his previous shot attempt.

Under Armour Hoping To Build $1 Billion Basketball Brand Around Stephen Curry

Apr 22, 2015 11:57 AM

Under Armour plans to build a $1 billion basketball brand around Stephen Curry.

“I’m as proud, I think, of the quality of people we have,” Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank said, speaking about how Curry carries himself off the court. “But from the Curry One [basketball shoe] to the Curry Two, we’ve been modifying and chasing that a little bit where we had pretty limited expectations of what we really wanted to do with that product to begin with... It’s going to help elevate what was about a $100 million basketball business. And you know our goal is building a billion-dollar-basketball brand.”

Under Armour said footwear revenue climbed 41% over a year ago and cited the strong growth to the introduction of the Curry One signature basketball shoe.

While Under Armour seems to be on the right track, senior Sterne Agee & Leach analyst Sam Poser said talk of a billion-dollar basketball business is premature. Under Armour’s basketball business would have to grow 30% a year for the next 10 years for it to reach $1 billion.

“Stephen Curry is a great player,” Poser said. “But it’s about whether he’s able to gain that iconic status where wearing his shoes is cool.”

Draymond: Focus Is To Just Make Anthony Davis Take Tough Shots

Apr 21, 2015 10:51 AM

Draymond Green is one of the NBA's most versatile defenders, but Anthony Davis represents a special challenge for him in the Golden State Warriors' first round series against the New Orleans Pelicans.

“It’s tough–most guys I give up length to who I guard, most of them aren’t as quick as me, though," said Green. "He’s both. Special athlete, man. So it’s always tough because he’s the not the type that’s really trying to back me down; he’s going to face up every time.

“And he uses his speed to his advantage. But even if I cut him off, he’s so long, he’ll still try to shoot over the top.

“But that’s what you have to make him do, though. You have to to make him take tough shots with you in between him and the basket. When he’s getting dunks and lay-ups, he’s unstoppable. But if you can make him tough shots with you in between you and the basket, you’ve got a much better chance of stopping him.

“That was my focus the entire night, just trying to make him tough shots. If he hits them, he hits them.”

Green hopes to eventually wear down Davis each game.

”You’re making him take those tough shots, eventually he’ll wear down. Once he started to wear down, those tough shots don’t go in as easily. And that’s really what you want to do as a defender.

“It’s a 48-minute marathon. It’s not a 12-minute race. For 48 minutes you’ve got to continue to grind and grind and grind.

“At some point he’ll wear down and those tough shots won’t fall as consistently.”

Drummond: I Want Draymond Green On Pistons

Apr 20, 2015 1:44 PM

Andre Drummond posted a Tweet that he has since deleted indicating he would love to play with Draymond Green.

Green will be a restricted free agent in the offseason and was an All-American at Michigan State.

Green is one of the NBA's best stretch forwards and would seemingly be an ideal fit for the Detroit Pistons beside Drummond.

“I want @Money23Green on my team .......” wrote Drummond.

Stephen Curry: Warriors In Title Or Bust Mode Entering Playoffs

Apr 16, 2015 4:39 PM

Stephen Curry says the Golden State Warriors are entering the playoffs with a championship or bust mentality.

"For the players, it is," Curry told Yahoo Sports. "No one will be happy for anything less. If we don't win our last game this season it's going to be a disappointing feeling, one where we felt like we fell short."

The Warriors won a franchise record 67 games in the regular season.

"We know we are going to get everybody's best shot," Curry said. "The regular season has prepared us for playoff situations. We've had a lot of double-digit wins, but we've really had to fight for 48 minutes every single night to make that happen. You'd probably look at it and say that's easy. That's great preparation for what we are going to have to go through.

"You just got to prepare. The feeling in the locker room is the exact same. You got to be very hungry. No one has changed, and I think that's a big deal."
