Warriors Talk About How Stephen Curry Has Created Team's Culture

May 31, 2018 5:23 PM

The Golden State Warriors discussed aspects of their team culture that make them special.

"It doesn't feel like a job," Green said. "I think that's why it's been so hard to beat this team. You look at so many teams that may try to match things up with personnel or putting 'All-Stars' together [or] 'Superteams' together. But you miss certain elements of it that really makes it all go."

"A coach does not create the culture," said Steve Kerr. "Players really create the culture through their force of personality and leadership within the group. The coach's job is to shape the culture."

The authenticity of Stephen Curry defines the Warriors.

"When you know everybody here and everybody's open to be themselves, really he is," Durant says. "That's what the culture is set, [that] it's all right to be who you are. Steph started off here. He's the one that's been here the longest. So, it's like, everybody in here is just kind of doing their best to assist him in whatever he needs to be, as a young player all the way up until now.

"So if you come in here and you have an ego, or you think you're bigger than the team, the guy who we built this around is not. So maybe you need to go. You know what I'm saying?"

Bob Myers Suggests Warriors' Players Have Earned Right To Keep Core Together

May 31, 2018 12:11 PM

Bob Myers had an extended conversation on the eve of The Finals to discuss the present and future of the Golden State Warriors.

“I definitely know this is ending,” Myers said. “I don’t need any reminders. The narrative is, ‘This will go on forever.’ On the record, it can’t. Nothing does, especially in a sport where the competition is so great.”

The Warriors barely beat the Rockets to reach their fourth straight Finals.

“No team should last forever. It’s not good for anybody,” Myers said. “I’m fully aware. I don’t need a reminder from Houston to know how fragile this whole thing is. That’s a part of it. That’s why you have to appreciate it.”

Myers was asked how much his decision making will be influenced by the Warriors' success or failure against the Cavaliers.

“I don’t know. I don’t think you can evaluate anything until your year is over, good, bad or in the middle,” Myers said. “It’s an incomplete product. Who knows. I have no idea if we win or lose, what that will look like. I think our players have shown they’re made of the right stuff. So you don’t do anything rash. They’ve earned the right to continue on this journey.”

The Warriors have future decisions to make with new contracts coming due for Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.

“At one point, players get older and teams get broken up,” Myers said. “It always happens. You just don’t know when.”

Stephen Curry Expects Finals MVP Narrative To Take Life

May 31, 2018 11:35 AM

Stephen Curry has won the regular season MVP award twice but has yet to win a Finals MVP. Andre Iguodala won the award in 2015 while Kevin Durant won it in 2017.

"It took to the second question of my first media availability, so I'm pretty sure that narrative's going to take life, as it has since 2015," Curry said. "But it doesn't make or break my career or whatever you want to say looking back. If we win this championship and I don't win Finals MVP, I'm going to be smiling just as wide and just as big."

Curry said the Finals MVP-void narrative isn't coming from his inner circle.

"Not even the people close to me," he said. "That's kind of the nature of the beast being on this stage four times in a row. You've always got to look at what you don't have. There is always that thing about society always looking at can you attain more and more and more."

"I can guarantee you that Steph is not up late thinking about winning the Finals MVP," Draymond Green told ESPN. "We're all trying to win another championship. If he gets [the award], he gets it. But that's not what he, or anybody else on this team, is playing for."

Curry realizes he has to be comfortable accepting criticisms.

"That's fine. It's part of the beast," he said. "It's part of my motivation to try to get back to this stage because I want more championships. But I've never really highlighted the individual type -- even before my regular-season MVPs, I've never even really attacked it as if that was the goal, per se. Like I said, my values around how I play, good things usually happen for me and my team if I'm in that type of mindset.

"... But I'm going to play aggressively, confidently with that right energy and motivation to help my team win. And usually when I'm in that mindset, good things happen. Whether that means it's a Finals MVP or not, who cares, but I'm going to be playing like it for sure."

Kevin Durant: The Game Is At A Mental Point In My Career

May 29, 2018 3:49 PM

Kevin Durant was asked about his inconsistencies in the Western Conference Finals.

"For me, the game is at a mental point in my career where I'm just trying to figure things out out there," said Durant. "I know what I can do physically. I know what I work on. I try to stick to what I do. But they did such a good job of switching. I know the whole iso thing was a big thing around our team. We talked about it a lot. So for me, after the first two games, you know, I just felt like I can get a lot in the switches and the mismatches.

"I thought they did a great job when I get it in the post. When I'm driving, they start to bring guys over and help and shadow a bit. I wasn't seeing that for a couple games. I was running the crowd. As I was forcing, I was going too fast on my drives and on my moves. Had me just thinking too much out there.

"When I just decided to just say, forget it, and just hoop and play ball, tonight I just tried to come out and play as hard as I can on the defensive side of the ball and let my offense come around, whereas the games before I was thinking about my offense coming into the game.

"Mentally I just tried to figure myself out, and I'm glad I was able to figure it out with a W instead of going home with a loss."

Andre Iguodala Receives 2nd Opinion On Left Knee Injury

May 29, 2018 10:48 AM

Andre Iguodala recently received a second opinion on his injured left knee.

Iguodala has been out since Game 3 with what the Warriors are labeling a left lateral leg contusion.

On Monday morning, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Iguodala was having a difficult time being sidelined deep into the playoffs.

"He's frustrated," Kerr said. "His body has not responded at this point."

Iguodala plans to search for a remedy in the coming days but his status for Game 1 of The Finals is uncertain.

Andre Iguodala Ruled Out For Game 7

May 28, 2018 7:09 PM

Andre Iguodala has been ruled out for Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals as he continues to battle a left lateral leg contusion.

"He's frustrated," Steve Kerr said. "He's totally frustrated. If he could play, he would play. But his body has not responded to this point."

Iguodala was injured in Game 3 when he banged knees with James Harden.

The Warriors have a thin wing rotation as they have continued to have an excess of centers.

Steve Kerr Thought Warriors Had Breakthrough In Game 5 Loss

May 27, 2018 11:19 AM

Steve Kerr entered Game 6 confident of the Warriors' chances due to things he saw his team figure out in their Game 5 loss.

“No, I truly felt something coming,” Kerr said. “I thought we had a breakthrough last game, a couple things offensively. Nothing I want to mention. But I thought we had a couple breakthroughs that were going to lead to this game.

“What I didn’t see coming was the horrific defense we started the game with. Oh my God, we let (Trevor) Ariza get wide open. I made a mistake — at one point I was yelling to David West while play was going on, he looked over at me, (James) Harden hit a 3.

“We were out of sorts. All of us — players and the coaching staff — I thought. Early on, we couldn’t believe what we were seeing. But we just stuck with it. Our guys were great. I just think getting it to 10 at halftime was a really big deal. Because 10 for us is nothing. It’s a couple possessions. Especially here. And sure enough, 8-0 run to start the third quarter, we’re right back in it.”

The Warriors again began to move the ball, cut and screen while getting out in transition.

“Yeah, we’ve been trying to get back to being us all series,” Kerr said. “I think Houston has done a great job of defending us, switching everything. They’ve built a great roster to do what they’re doing. They’ve got size and strength at every position. Sometimes, you kind of have to figure it out in terms of the ball movement.

“A lot of this stuff is different for us, because of the switching 1 through 5. So I think we’ve been trying to get more and more movement and mix in the KD isos against the mismatches. Tonight, obviously, we did a better job of finding the balance.”

Steve Kerr Told Michael Jordan Story To Kevin Durant During Middle Of Game 5

May 25, 2018 12:16 PM

During the third quarter of Game 5, Steve Kerr told Kevin Durant a story about Michael Jordan trusting his teammates.

"When MJ was with the Bulls, we had a playoff game," Kerr began the story as he was mic'd up by TNT. "He kept trying to score and he was scoring, but we weren't getting anything going. Phil Jackson said 'Who's open?' He said, 'John Paxson.'"

Paxson hit the series-clinching shot in Game 6 of the 1993 Finals off a Jordan pass, while Kerr also hit a game-winning shot in The Finals from a Jordan assist.

"I want to trust your teammates early," Kerr said. "What you're doing is you're getting to the rim and then you're trying to hit him. I want you to trust the first guy and then move. Still attack, still look to score, but trust these guys, OK?"
