Kevin Durant: One-Plus-One Was Perfect To Keep Things Open For Me

Jul 27, 2018 10:05 AM

Kevin Durant signed a two-year, $61.5 million max contract with the Golden State Warriors this offseason and can become a free agent again in 2019.

The decision leaves his financial and team options open.

“I just want to take it a day at a time, and I don’t want to look at my future now,” Durant told Yahoo Sports. “The [one-plus-one] was the perfect thing for me to do, to keep things open for me — financially and what I want to do. It’s just one of those things.”

Durant joined the Warriors in 2016.

Kevin Durant Claims Media Trying To Make Him Look 'Sensitive'

Jul 26, 2018 8:35 PM

Kevin Durant says the media and aggregators have often made him look like "the sensitive one" just because he often says how he feels.

Durant was responding to questions from the media about his exchange with CJ McCollum on Twitter.

"Oh yeah," Durant, speaking after USA Basketball practice, said when asked if he is tired of people telling him to be quiet. "I mean, it is just to the point that I know what you're upset at. Just say it instead of make excuses. Know what I'm saying? I got too many texts or I talk too much on Instagram or I talk too much on Twitter or I don't know how to talk to my teammates, or I am angry or insecure or sensitive. Tell me what the real problem is.

"Because every time I say something, I go about my business, and when I say something, House of Highlights and Bleacher Report [mash] it all up and y'all run with it, and as soon as I say something back, I'm the sensitive one. I mean, I know y'all trying to make me look crazy and discredit me and strip me of my credibility. But I see what you doing. But I'm going to still keep standing."

On Wednesday, McCollum, replying to a tweet from a Barstool Sports host about Durant, called Durant's decision "soft" but added, "I respect it," likening it to getting jumped with your brothers by a gang and then leaving your brothers for that same gang.

Durant responded by tweeting, "U think that low of me CJ? I just did your f---in podcast. Snakes in the grass boy I tell ya."

Ed Davis Also Received Interest From Blazers, Warriors, 76ers, Thunder

Jul 26, 2018 9:50 AM

Ed Davis received interest from the Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder and Portland Trail Blazers before agreeing to a one-year, $4.4 million deal with the Brooklyn Nets.

“The main thing is they definitely came out aggressive when July 1 hit, so I definitely wanted to go to where I was wanted, so that had a lot to do with it,” Davis said on a conference call. “Then, I talked to Allen (Crabbe) and Jeremy (Lin) a little bit about the coaching staff and things like that and how the organization was run, and it was nothing but great things. Then, I think this team has potential definitely. We can try to make this push into the playoffs this year, and it’s going to be a challenge, but that’s one of the reasons why I’m here.”

Joe Lacob: We're Still Really Hungry, That's What People Should Be Worried About

Jul 23, 2018 3:54 PM

Joe Lacob explained one of the reasons why the Golden State Warriors continue to sustain their title run with moves such as signing DeMarcus Cousins.

“There’s a lot of market inefficiencies in the NBA,” Lacob said. “Other teams could have gotten Cousins, but they didn’t. There’s always going to be some sort of opportunity, some inefficiency, I believe.”

Lacob is angling for the Warriors to be a dynasty that extends beyond the careers of his current stars.

“We’re still really hungry,” Lacob said of the Warriors. “That’s what people should be worried about if they’re going to be worried about anything.”

Lacob, Guber Used 'Exploding Offer, Secret Meeting With Cohan To Purchase Warriors

Jul 23, 2018 3:53 PM

When Joe Lacob and Peter Guber were attempting to purchase the Golden State Warriors in 2010 from Chris Cohan, they were competing against Larry Ellison.

Lacob and Guber knew they would be unable to beat out Ellison in an open auction.

“When it got to $400 million, it was us and Ellison,” Lacob remembers in a lengthy piece from The Athletic written by Ethan Strauss. “I wasn’t even sure Ellison had a real bid at 400, I didn’t know. There were a lot of rumors that he did not, that he was waiting for me to go away because we needed to go away, we weren’t real. We had heard those rumors. So we were there, we felt we could do that. And once it got to that level, which kind of was the walk-away number initially, I said, ‘all right, thank you so much.’ It was going to take four and unfortunately he had more money than us and he, if he really wanted it, let’s be clear, he could’ve had it because he was one of the richest men in the world. He could’ve outbid us, no question.”

Lacob and Guber used an "exploding offer" tactic but insisted on meeting with Cohan in person to do so.

“Joe said, ‘We’ll call him and make this offer.’ I said, ‘Man, I’m a storyteller!’ That’s my whole history, 35 years," said Guber. "When you’re trying to sign a piece of talent, a big star actor, a talent, an artist, you have to be there. You have to look them in the eye. You have to breathe the same air. You can’t take any edge off your opportunity.”

“The key part of the strategy at that point had turned,” Lacob says of the ploy. “I called Sal Galatioto and said, ‘I need a meeting with Chris Cohan directly.’ And Sal said, ‘He’s not meeting with the buyers.’ I said, ‘Well, I have to drop out then. I need to have a discussion about whether I could really buy this team.’

“At first Sal refused and then finally for whatever reason, allowed us to meet with Chris Cohan. And so he said, ‘His son has a lacrosse tournament in Baltimore and if you want to meet him, it’s going to have to be tomorrow.’”

David Stern hinted at this move back in 2010.

“It wasn’t quite cloak and dagger, but it was to a degree,” said Stern.

Lacob retells, “I said in the meeting with Cohan, ‘I can’t bid against Larry Ellison. We just can’t do that.’ So can you name a price that you will sell it to me for. Just name the price.’ And we’re in at 400, which we thought was a lot, and I’m sure Larry (Ellison) did too. And Cohan said, ‘I can’t do that, we have a process, a bidding process, blah, blah, blah.’”

Lacob then added pressure to Cohan.

“I said, ‘Well, here’s the deal — I’m not bidding anymore, so I’m out. I can’t beat him in a bidding process. But if you give me a price that you absolutely will take, I will give you an answer yes or no.'”

Lacob and Guber were pessimistic initially.

“Cohan did not accept this at first,” Lacob recounts. “I told Peter as we’re flying home, I said, ‘I don’t think we’re going to get it.’” All that work, all that preparation, had led to another impasse, another stymied effort at buying a team. Or so it seemed.

“The next day, they called me back, and his people said, ‘It’s decided. He likes you.’”

The Warriors were ultimately sold to Lacob and Guber for $450 million.

Warriors Believe They'll Find Way To Afford $300M In Salaries, Luxury Tax In 19-20

Jul 23, 2018 1:00 PM

Bob Myers is confident the Golden State Warriors will be able to afford a roster and luxury tax bill that hits $300 million in 19-20.

“I feel like we’ll do whatever we can to keep winning,” Myers said. “And I think the players will do whatever they can to keep winning — not knowing what that will exactly look like.

“I guess it helps going into a new arena — the revenues. We’re lucky we’re supported by the fan base we are. … Working with Joe Lacob, Peter Guber, Rick Welts, all the people I work with and work for, they all want to win. ..

“Our players — Draymond Green has won at every level. Klay Thompson just wants to win. Steph Curry, he goes out and recruits a guy like Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant comes here under a lot of scrutiny and faces it and overcomes it. So I think with all that combined, I’m confident we can work it out. I can’t sit here today and mathematically show you; but based on all the things I’ve seen, we’ll find a way.”

The Warriors will open their new area in San Francisco in 19-20.

Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson will be eligible for max contracts in 2019 while Draymond Green becomes a free agent in 2020.

It is not inconceivable that Thompson and Green could take less money as Durant has in the recent past, while Curry was on a contract extension he significantly outplayed.

“Look, we know the numbers,” Myers said. “I don’t think we’re running from those things. … (But) we’ve got a group of players and an ownership group that wants to keep it together. That’s very competitive. Both sides. You’ve heard Klay’s comments (saying he might take less than his max to stay with the Warriors). You’ve been around Draymond. He wants to keep winning. …

“We’ll keep talking about it (with Thompson). We talked about that last year (during preseason) in China, we’ll continue to talk about it. For those guys, it’s their choice. We’ll try to pay them what’s fair. And it takes two. I know and understand, they’ve gotta like the deal, too. …

“I’ll tell you this, Klay’s not driven monetarily. I think he wants to be paid fairly. I think Draymond’s the same way. And obviously Kevin, he’s shown it, that he doesn’t have to have every last penny. … I feel like if we can create a place that gives them a chance to win a championship, get paid well, enjoy going to work every day — and people think an NBA player loves going to work every day. That’s not true; maybe it should be, but it isn’t. If we can create a place where players enjoy it, the hope is they want to continue to do that.”

The Detroit Pistons have hired Sammy Gelfand, who had served as an analytics guru for the Golden State Warriors.

Gelfand traveled with the team as a back of the bench assistant coach. Gelfand was Steve Kerr's go-to guy for statistical research.

The New York Times did a glowing mid-playoffs feature on Gelfand, titled: “The Left Side of Steve Kerr’s Brain.”
