LaVar Ball: Jerry Colangelo Is A Helicopter Parent

Jun 29, 2017 5:36 PM

LaVar Ball was critical of Jerry Colangelo, who is the father of Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo.

The 76ers hired Bryan Colangelo to run the team after Jerry Colangelo was brought in as a consultant.

“He’s worried about everything on the outside instead of getting the players,” Ball said. “He’s worried about the parents and all that, the people they’re around. You need to worry about what type of players you get for their system.”

Jerry Colangelo previously said the people around Lonzo Ball "present a challenge" when asked about the possibility of the 76ers drafting him.

“He said, ‘I don’t like the people around Lonzo,’” Ball said. “That’s the one where I’m just like, OK, what have you done? All you did was for the USA team, and now you’re son is running a business there and you a so-called consultant. You a helicopter parent, over there trying to tell your son what to do.”

Pacers Asking Celtics For Both Nets, Lakers 2018 FRP, Starting Player(s)

Jun 29, 2017 12:56 PM

The Boston Celtics consider the Indiana Pacers' most recent trade demand for Paul George to be unrealistic.

The Celtics are reportedly interested in trading for George if they are able to sign Gordon Hayward in free agency.

Kevin Pritchard is asking the Celtics for the Brooklyn Nets' 2018 first round pick as well as the Los Angeles Lakers' 2018 first round pick, plus starting player(s).

George can be a free agent in 2018 and is not certain to re-sign with the Celtics as he's signaled a preference to play for the Lakers.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Lakers are also interested in trading for George this offseason.

Paul George Willing To Commit Long-Term To Cavs If LeBron Stays

Jun 28, 2017 1:19 PM

Paul George is open to re-signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers if he's traded there this offseason and LeBron James chooses to remain there next summer.

While George has preferred to end up with the Los Angeles Lakers, he is prudent enough to not leave an opportunity to compete for a title with the Cavaliers. The Cavaliers are attempting to come up with a three-way trade scenario involving Kevin Love that results in a trade for George.

George also feels the same way if he's traded to the Boston Celtics or San Antonio Spurs.

The Lakers have limited assets to trade to the Indiana Pacers for George even with the commitment that he'll re-sign.

Celtics Have Increasing Confidence In Paul George Extension

Jun 27, 2017 2:30 PM

The Boston Celtics have an increasing level of confidence in their ability to sign Paul George to a contract extension.

George has been believed to prefer to join the Los Angeles Lakers either via trade or in the offseason of 2018.

The Celtics' belief they can turn George into more than a one-year rental has them increasingly willing to part with significant assets to the Indiana Pacers.

The Pacers could allow George to speak to potential suitors about a contract extension, though that permission has yet to be granted.

Lakers, Cavs, Rockets, Celtics, Spurs Pursued Paul George Heading To Draft

Jun 25, 2017 8:12 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets, Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs were among the teams that pursued a trade for Paul George aggressively leading up to the draft.

The Rockets and Lakers remain determined to keep pushing for a George trade, while the Cavaliers also are attempting to construct three-way scenarios involving Kevin Love.

The Celtics are expected to revisit discussions for Paul if they're able to sign Gordon Hayward in free agency.

The Cavaliers believe trading for George could convince him to abandon his plan to join the Lakers in 2018.

Magic Johnson On D'Angelo Russell: I Needed Somebody Players Want To Play With

Jun 24, 2017 2:49 PM

Magic Johnson was critical of D'Angelo Russell in his comments after the Los Angeles Lakers traded him to the Brooklyn Nets in a move that frees up cap space and makes it clear that Lonzo Ball will be their face of the franchise.

"I'm going to do what it takes to get the right players in here with the right mindset," Johnson said. "D'Angelo is an excellent player. He has the talent to be an All-Star. We want to thank him for what he did for us, but what I needed was a leader. I needed somebody also that can make the other players better, and also that players want to play with."

The Lakers drafted Russell with the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, but used his potential to clear out Timofey Mozgov's contract while also acquiring Brook Lopez and the 27th overall pick.

Paul George's R&E Would Be $94M Over Three Years, Expires When Eligible For 35 Percent Max

Jun 23, 2017 9:45 PM

In following up on a report that the Boston Celtics could do an extend-and-trade agreement with Paul George and the Indiana Pacers if they manage to sign Gordon Hayward in free agency, Albert Nahmad explained why the scenario makes financial sense.

Under that scenario, George would increase his 17-18 salary from $19.5 million to the $29.7 million maximum and then extend for two additional years, which would mean $94 million over three years.

If George were to wait for six months after the trade, he could extend for four years at $169 million. But Boston would be required to keep the cap space necessary to increase George's salary to the max, which is $10.2 million.

On the renegotiation and extension deal, George would add $74 million over just two seasons and he would be instantly eligible for a 10-year veteran max at 35 percent in the 2020 offseason when he will have turned 30 that May.

While George has preferred to join the Los Angeles Lakers, he can compete for a title with the Celtics while having a financial incentive in both the short-term and long-term. If the Lakers don't trade for George, they can only offer him a four-year deal in 2018 with five percent raises.

Lakers Were Sold On Lonzo Ball After Private Workout, Meeting In Chino Hills

Jun 23, 2017 4:50 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers requested a second workout with Lonzo Ball at their practice facility, but agent Harrison Gaines insisted the team instead see a day in Ball's life.

During a four-hour meeting in Chino Hills, LaVar Ball, trainer Darren Moore, Gaines, Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka all watched his training session which included running hills, weightlifting, on-court drills and then breakfast with the entire Ball family.

“I wanted to show I don’t hide from anything,” Lonzo told The Vertical. “I just wanted to show the type of person I am. I wanted to show them what I do every day. I don’t hide. The way it turned out, I was very happy with it.”

At 8 a.m., Lonzo started the first part of a full daily routine led by Moore and LaVar. Lonzo ran a mile and then sprinted up two different steep hills near his home eight times each.

A weight-room session in the Ball family’s garage followed at 9:15 a.m., which included a discussion of basketball philosophy between Lonzo, Johnson and Pelinka.

Lonzo then had an on-court workout with Moore at 10:30 a.m at Chino Hills High School.

LaVar then prepared a meal for the meeting with Johnson and Pelinka at the Ball residence.

Ball was sick during his first workout with the Lakers on June 7th, but believed his adrenaline would negate any weakness.

Lakers Offered Unprotected Future First To Teams Willing To Take Deng Or Mozgov

Jun 23, 2017 4:14 PM

The Los Angeles Lakers offered an unprotected future first round pick to every team in the NBA with cap room in order to unload the contract of either Timofey Mozgov or Luol Deng.

Without any teams taking on one of those deals, the Lakers instead traded D'Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets with Mozgov for Brook Lopez and a late first rounder.

The Lakers signed Mozgov and Deng during the final offseason of the regime of Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss.

The Lakers are attempting to clear cap space to pursue the 2018 free agency class.
