Tom Thibodeau On Whether Knicks Conducted Rick Brunson Investigation: Team Is 'Gonna Vet Everyone'

Sep 27, 2022 11:10 PM

Tom Thibodeau said that the New York Knicks vetted Rick Brunson amid concern that the team did not conduct an investigation into the events that lead to the assistant coach's resignation while with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Brunson, who was hired by Thibodeau this summer, was accused of improper conduct toward women while on the job in 2018. A woman, who did not work for the team, filed a complaint to the Wolves alleging that Brunson made unwanted advances towards her during the playoffs.

“I would just say in general, our organization is gonna vet everyone. That’s a normal protocol now. But I’m not sure exactly of everything that was done, but I know whenever they hire anyone, they’re gonna vet them," said Thibodeau.

Thibodeau then deferred to team president Leon Rose when asked to clarify his comments.

Rose has previously declined to comment on the situation.

Knicks Sign Jalen Harris; Waive Garrison Brooks, Nuni Omot

Sep 26, 2022 8:30 AM

The New York Knicks have signed guard Jalen Harris to a training camp contract. New York also waived forward Garrison Brooks and Nuni Omot from their camp deals.

Harris was previously with the Toronto Raptors on a Two-Way contract during the 2020-21 season. Harris appeared in 13 NBA games that season and averaged 7.4 points in 13.2 minutes per game.

Harris was suspended for the entire 2021-22 season due to violating the NBA and NBPA's joint drug policy. The 24-year-old guard was reinstated this offseason.

Brooks and Omot were signed to fully non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contracts. Both players are expected to play with the Westchester Knicks of the G League this season.

Knicks Were Skeptical Of Cavs' Interest In Donovan Mitchell Due To Extension Rule Impacting Evan Mobley

Sep 21, 2022 2:39 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded for Donovan Mitchell despite how it impacts their ability to sign Evan Mobley to a full, five-year max out of his rookie contract due to existing collective bargaining agreement rules.

The way Cleveland was impacted by that rule reportedly led to speculation on the part of the New York Knicks, who were also pursuing a trade for Mitchell, that the Cavs wouldn't present an all-in offer to the Utah Jazz because of it.

"Frankly, I think when the Knicks were negotiating against the Cavs, the Knicks knew that the Cavs were bidding against them," said Brian Windhorst. "The Knicks, I think, thought they were bidding against themselves. And I think one of the reasons why the Knicks weren't 100 percent certain the Cavs were going to go all-in is because they were saying, 'Well, the Cavs can't trade for Donovan Mitchell because it will handcuff them on Evan Mobley.'"

If the rule doesn't change as part of the next CBA, the Cavaliers can either sign Mobley to a four-year extension, or wait for his restricted free agency to sign him to a five-year max contract.

The Cavaliers ultimately decided the upside of trading for Mitchell was worth all of their draft capital plus whatever consequences come from making the Mobley long-term deal more complicated.

Knicks' Front Office Hierarchy Considered Confusing By League Sources

Sep 16, 2022 10:49 AM

The front office hierarchy of the New York Knicks under Leon Rose has been considered confusing by many league sources who spoke with Marc Berman of the New York Post. The confusion of who is in charge can get amplified during trade talks, which is why Rose put Gersson Rosas as the point man to communicate with Justin Zanik of the Utah Jazz on a Donovan Mitchell trade.

In addition to Rose and Rosas, the Knicks also have William Wesley, Brock Aller and Scott Perry in influential roles.

“Leon delegates too much — delegates to a fault," one coaching source said. “They had a breakaway layup and blew it."

The Knicks have also been inactive during each of the past two trade deadlines.

People around the league say Tom Thibodeau was disheartened when the Knicks were unable to trade for Mitchell.

NBA Initiated Tampering Investigation On 76ers, Knicks With Findings Expected Within Weeks

Sep 14, 2022 10:01 PM

The NBA initiated its investigations on potential tampering conducted this offseason by the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks as it was not based on a complaint from a team.

"The statuses of those investigations are ongoing. Hopefully they’ll be wrapped up in the next few weeks," said Adam Silver.

"I think what prompted them was sort of just the tick-tock chronology around sort of when signings are permissible and the announcements of those signings and the information that came out about them, which was cause for the league office to investigate."

Last year, the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls were each forced to forfeit a second round pick due to tampering charges.

Knicks Not Currently Interested In Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony

Sep 14, 2022 3:45 PM

The New York Knicks have a pair of open roster spots, but are not interested in high profile veteran free agents Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge or Carmelo Anthony. The Knicks had kept the roster spots open as they discussed a trade for Donovan Mitchell, though a major deal involving Julius Randle or Evan Fournier remains possible.

Anthony has been amenable to a return to the Knicks this offseason and the front office had internal discussions previously on signing him.

Other veteran big men who remain available include Tristan Thompson, Dwight Howard, Cody Zeller and Hassan Whiteside.

Tom Thibodeau has a history of making his 15th man someone who doesn’t care about playing time.
