Jalen Brunson To Sign Four-Year, $110M Deal With Knicks

Jun 30, 2022 5:05 PM

Jalen Brunson intends to sign a four-year, $110 million deal with the New York Knicks at the start of free agency. The deal will likely be worth approximately $105 million plus additional incentives.

Brunson informed the Dallas Mavericks of his plans. The Mavericks were never given a chance to make an offer to Brunson.

Dallas declined the opportunity to extend Brunson on a four-year, $56 million extension multiple times during the 21-22 season.

The Knicks cleared cap space in the week before the start of free agency to make an offer to Brunson. Brunson's father, Rick Brunson, was hired by the Knicks as an assistant coach this offseason. Brunson's former agent, Leon Rose, runs New York's front office.

Brunson averaged 16.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 79 games during the regular season.

Knicks Clear $19M In Cap Space By Trading Nerlens Noel, Alec Burks To Pistons

Jun 28, 2022 10:12 PM

The New York Knicks have agreed to trade Nerlens Noel and Alec Burks to the Detroit Pistons, which will clear $19 million in additional cap space as they are set to pursue Jalen Brunson in free agency.

The Knicks will send the Pistons back its 2023 second round pick, a 2024 second rounder via the Miami Heat, and $6 million in cash.

The Knicks are now considered the strong favorites to sign Brunson with an offer of more than $100 million over four years.

The Knicks can also offer Brunson the opportunity to be their primary playmaker.

Mavericks Feel Knicks Have Become 'Inevitable Destination' For Jalen Brunson

Jun 28, 2022 5:19 PM

The New York Knicks have lined themselves up to pursue Jalen Brunson in free agency and there is "a growing resignation" among the Dallas Mavericks that they will lose him, writes Marc Stein of Substack. The concern is that the Knicks have become Brunson's "top choice and his inevitable destination."

Tim Cato of The Athletic reports that Brunson leaving the Mavericks for the Knicks "at this point, [is] seen as a certainty."

The Mavericks twice passed on the opportunity to sign Brunson to a four-year, $55 million extension. Brunson will likely sign for approximately twice that amount in free agency.

Brunson was a second round pick out of Villanova in 2018.

Jalen Brunson Expected To Decide Between Mavericks, Knicks

Jun 27, 2022 10:19 AM

The Dallas Mavericks want to re-sign Jalen Brunson, and have publicly made that known. The New York Knicks can't publicly say they want to sign Brunson, but they seem to be gearing up for a run at the free agent point guard.

After the 2022 NBA Draft, where New York cleared some additional 2022 cap space, it now seems like Brunson's options are down to the Mavs or Knicks. The Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers are no longer being mentioned as potential destinations for Brunson. The Washington Wizards, who have openly talked about their need for a point guard, have no real path towards signing Brunson.

Brunson's next contract is expected to be somewhere in the range of four-years and $100 million. The Knicks are one salary-clearing deal away from creating the space to sign Brunson to a big enough first-year salary for a $100 million contract. The Mavericks can re-sign Brunson to any deal up to his max using his Bird Rights.

Thunder Competed Against Cavs To Acquire Ousmane Dieng From Knicks At No. 11

Jun 24, 2022 10:09 AM

The Oklahoma City Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers competed against each other to acquire the No. 11 pick from the New York Knicks as both teams were believed to be targeting Ousmane Dieng.

"Cleveland and Oklahoma City were eyeing each other throughout the last few days. I think both wanting the same prospect, Ousmane Dieng, who is French but played in the Australia league last year.

"The Thunder were wondering if the Cavs were going to get to 11. The Cavs were wondering if the Thunder would take Dieng ahead of them. I know they both had talks with the Knicks throughout the day."

The Thunder traded three future first round picks to the Knicks to acquire No. 11 while also keeping No. 12.

The Cavalier selected Ochai Agbaji at No. 14.

Knicks Prioritizing Jalen Brunson Over Kyrie Irving

Jun 24, 2022 10:01 AM

The New York Knicks are the team on Kyrie Irving's list who could clear sufficient cap space to sign him outright, but they are believed to prefer the option of signing Jalen Brunson.

"The Knicks, they have some priorities well ahead of Kyrie Irving," "Jalen Brunson is who they are trying to clear cap space to sign in free agency, not Kyrie Irving."

The Knicks have been linked to Brunson for months with their connections to him in Leon Rose and his own father on Tom Thibodeau's coaching staff. The Knicks were interested in Irving during the 2019 offseason.

The Los Angeles Lakers have the "most interest" in acquiring Irving.
