Sixers Looking To Draft A Sharpshooter

May 28, 2008 4:56 PM

The Sixers are looking to improve upon their league-worst three-point shooting attack by taking a sharpshooter in June's NBA Draft, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

General Manager and President Ed Stefanski is taking a long look at prospects like West Virginia's Joe Alexander and Arizona's Chase Budinger.

However, if both are off the board he'll have to decide between Chris Douglas-Roberts of Memphis and Brandon Rush of Kansas.

"We need a shooter, we need a [center or power forward], and maybe down the line we need a point guard, too," Stefanski said Tuesday. "This draft is deep enough that we think we can get the best player available and pick for a need, too."

"I don't know if we'll get a guy who can step in right away, but we feel comfortable that we'll get a player to add to the team. With all of the young guys that we have, starting [in the rotation] right away may be difficult," he added.

Sixers In No Rush To Extend Miller

May 22, 2008 11:25 AM

Andre Miller represents an expiring $10 million contract at the end of next season; therefore, the Sixers are in no rush to sign him to an extension.  That expiring deal could become a huge trade chip during February's trade deadline.

RealGM Note: Miller was ranked 33rd in season FIC and had a +36% Reina Value ('deserved' to make $12.5 million).

Brand, Smith On Stefanski's Radar?

May 8, 2008 4:11 PM

The 76ers have roughly $11 million in cap space this summer and General Manager Ed Stefanski reportedly has Elton Brand and Josh Smith on his radar, according to The News Journal.

Stefanski is also rumored to be interested in Antawn Jamison, but he appears to be the most likely to remain with his current team (Washington).

"The perfect situation is to get a power forward," Stefanski said. "But I'm not going to be distraught if we don't get one because we'll add some pieces to do it in a different way."

Stefanski is also hoping to re-sign swingman Andre Iguodala this summer while fortifying the team's roster through the draft (16th pick).

Iguodala Is Stefanski's Top Priority

May 8, 2008 10:14 AM

In a teleconference with reporters on Wednesday 76ers' GM Ed Stefanski admitted that retaining Andre Iguodala is the team's top priority this offseason, according to The Philadelphia Daily News.

"Iguodala is a very good basketball player. I think - I know - he's a guy we'd like to keep, going forward here," Stefanski said.

"Now, negotiations are negotiations," Stefanski said. "What I've said numerous times is, 'we're trying to get a 'team.' We're not built to run [the Detroit Pistons'] style, but if we can get a team like that and have a style we'd like to play, which is an up-tempo style, that would be our goal."

Iguodala is a restricted free agent and rejected an in-season offer to remain with the team over the long-term.

RealGM Note: Iguodala ranked 20th in the NBA using the Floor Impact Counter (FIC) as a guide. He also posted a Reina Value of +399, meaning that he 'deserved' to make more than the 76ers were actually paying him.

Stefanski Expects To Match Offers For Iguodala

May 2, 2008 4:28 PM

Ed Stefanski is glad that Andre Iguodala is a restricted free agent because he claims that the Sixers plan on matching any offers for the young swingman, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

"I would say, 'Thank God they're restricted,' because we have no intention of not matching any offer from another team," Stefanski said of Iguodala and Louis Williams.

Iguodala rejected an extension offer from then-GM Billy King during the season that would have paid him $57 million.

"We need to keep getting better pieces," Stefanski added. "The beauty of this is, young guys get older and [improve as] NBA players. We have to decide whether they can help us get to the next level."

RealGM Note: Iguodala was ranked 20th in the entire NBA by our FIC statistical measurement.  He 'deserved' to make $13.76 million and had a Reina Value of +399%.

Stefanski Wants To Extend Cheeks' Contract Again

May 2, 2008 5:44 AM

Sixers' GM Ed Stefanski has already given Coach Mo Cheeks a one-year extension, and another may be on the way, Phil Jasner of of the Philadelphia Daily News is reporting.

Stefanski confirmed his plans to at least discuss the idea with Cheeks last night, before Philadelphia was eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of Detroit.

"When I took the job [in early December], I didn't know Maurice, but I've been very happy with what I've seen," Stefanski said. "When I gave him the 1-year extension - and I know some people felt I should have done more - I felt it was a reward. I've been very happy since then, too."

"To me, it's only natural to sit down with him at whatever point our season is over and talk about things, see where his head is. And when I talk about him, I always like to mention the staff [assistants Jim Lynam, Henry Bibby, John Loyer, and Bernie Smith] because they've done it together."

Pistons Thump Sixers, Advance

May 1, 2008 11:03 PM

The Detroit Pistons routed the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night, 100-77, to advance into the second round of the NBA playoffs.

Richard Hamilton posted 24 points and 5 assists and Chauncey Billups tallied 20 points and 7 dimes for the Pistons, who hit 58% of their shot attempts and outrebounded Philadelphia by five.

Detroit did turn the ball over five more times in the win, but their three-point shooting (9-for-16) helped make up for any of their shortcomings.

Andre Iguodala had 16 points and 4 rebounds and Samuel Dalembert added 8 points and 6 boards for the Sixers in the loss. Philadelphia made just 33% of their shots, while going 3-for-13 from beyond the arc.

The 76ers did attempt twenty more foul shots than the Pistons, but they sank just 66% of them.

Detroit's swamping defense held Philadelphia down for the entire game, including a twelve-point first quarter. The Pistons posted the first ten points of the game and never looked back.

Detroit will host Game One of their semifinal playoff series against Orlando on Saturday.
