Suns Excited For Return To Run-And-Gun

Sep 29, 2009 4:00 PM

The Suns are preparing for a full-season of their run-and-gun attack with Shaquille O'Neal no longer in Phoenix.

Steve Nash said Monday that the team enters training camp with "a clear vision of how we're going to play."

Phoenix failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2004 last season in a tumultuous year that saw head coach Terry Porter fired at the All-Star break.

"We've got to reinstate the culture that we had here," new coach Alvin Gentry said. "We're going to attack. We're going to score a lot of points."

Gentry Plans To Rest Stars Late In Games

Sep 28, 2009 4:30 PM

Suns coach Alvin Gentry is hoping that the team's depth with allow him to rest his stars at the end of games.

"I don't mind having that problem," Gentry told the Arizona Republic of having depth. "That's the best you could possibly hope for. I do think there'll be a battle for playing time, and that should make camp very interesting.

"I wish we could play 10 guys, so that we have enough confidence and have Steve, Grant and Amar? fresh down the stretch, where they're not asked to play the last 11 minutes of the game."

Nash, 35, played in 73 games last season, averaging 33.6 minutes per contest. Hill, who will turn 37 next week, averaged 29.8 minutes per game in 2008-09.

Dickau Picks Suns Over Celtics For Training Camp

Sep 24, 2009 11:12 AM

Dan Dickau had a standing invitation to Boston's training camp but elected to take his shot with the Suns instead.

Phoenix already has 13 players under contract and is unlikely to add another player but their system provides a better showcase for Dickau to potentially pickup with another team.

"This summer, I was just going to be as patient as I could," Dickau said after playing pickup games with the Suns on Wednesday. "There were other European teams that showed interest and wanted to make an offer. I told them I want to be as patient as I can, knowing there probably wasn?t going to be a guaranteed deal. But if I was patient, maybe there?d be a good opportunity to go to camp with a team. If you play well, you never know what happens."

Nash: Players Shouldn't Be Judged On Titles

Sep 19, 2009 8:34 AM

Suns point guard Steve Nash doesn't believe that players should be judged solely on the number of championships they win.

"I'm not one of those people that feel if you don't win a title everything was for naught," Nash told Yahoo! Sports. "Only one team wins it and a lot of times there is luck involved."

Nash signed a two-year contract extension with Phoenix this summer and the Suns are no longer considered a strong title contender after some turnover on both the roster and the coaching staff.

"I don't think it's something you should judge yourself on," Nash added of winning an NBA title. "If you're lucky enough to be on a team that wins it, you should celebrate that. I had one [college] scholarship offer, so for me to experience the things I experienced, for me to travel the world and provide for my family and to play with the amount of teammates that I've enjoyed playing with, there is no way I can look at it at all negatively if I don't win a championship."

Frye Creating Mismatches In Phoenix

Sep 16, 2009 4:38 PM

Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic writes that Suns big man Channing Frye could create offensive mismatches this season.

The team has been taking part in voluntary workouts and traditional centers have had a hard time defending Frye, according to Coro.

If defenders leave Frye open on the perimeter, he's comfortable hitting a jumper. In addition, if defenders rush out to pressure him, he has the explosiveness to blow by them.

Suns Buyout Pavlovic, Save $500k

Sep 14, 2009 7:02 PM

The Suns and Sasha Pavlovic agreed to a buyout that will save the Suns $500,000 more than they stood to save on simply waiving the guard.

Pavlovic had only $1.5 million of this coming season's $6.95 million salary guaranteed him, but has accepted a $1.25 million buyout, giving the Suns an extra $250,000 savings in salary and another $250,000 saved from the luxury tax it would have cost. Pavlovic sought a buyout to explore interest from other teams, which start training camps in two weeks.

The buyout is pending league approval.

Doctor Gives Amar?'s Recovery Rave Reviews

Sep 11, 2009 4:10 PM

Dr. Pravin Dugel says that Suns center Amar? Stoudemire's recovery from eye surgery is coming along tremendously.

He had a procedure to repair a detached retina, which ended his season early, in February.

"This injury is more serious than any he's had before," Dugel told the Arizona Republic. "This was more career-threatening. We came very close to having a lot of difficulty. With a traumatic detachment like he had and a lot of tears and scars in a person this young, the risk of losing vision is very high."

Dugel says that Stoudemire has 20/20 vision with contact lenses and that there are no restrictions on his activity.

The surgeon added that Stoudemire could develop scar tissue or a cataract, which could in turn create another detachment.

"Can bad things happen? Yes," Dugel added. "Is it likely? No."

Nash To Be More Vocal On The Floor

Sep 9, 2009 3:04 PM

Suns point guard Steve Nash has been more vocal on the floor recently.

Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic writes that, "Nash is being more vocal on the floor. He talked a few times to teammates about switches on defense and what they needed to be doing."

Nash hasn't been much of a vocal presence in Phoenix, preferring to lead by example through hard work.

A number of the Suns have gotten together to practice together prior to training camp.
