Damian Lillard To Seek Designated Five-Year Max Deal With Blazers

Apr 30, 2015 9:53 PM

Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard will seek the designated player maximum contract – a full five-year deal – in a possible extension this upcoming offseason, league sources told RealGM.

The Blazers will address the immediate futures of LaMarcus Aldridge and Wesley Matthews when the July free agency begins, but the franchise is also expected to start talks on a new deal with Lillard this summer.

Lillard, sources said, has no plans to consider signing an extension less than the designated max – nor would the two-time NBA All-Star and 2013 Rookie of the Year be financially inclined to do so given 2016’s rising free agency market, when upward of 20 teams could extend $20 million-plus offer sheets to Lillard.

In his exit interview Thursday, Lillard told reporters he’s confident in extension talks with the Blazers, which could reach a possible $90 million-plus. Discussions can’t start until July,  and the Blazers have long shown faith in the sixth overall pick of the 2012 draft.

Over his pro career, Lillard has earned more money in endorsement deals than his NBA salary, signing a lucrative extension with adidas in 2014.

Lillard, 24, has increased his scoring average in each of his three NBA seasons (19, 20.7, 21), adding 6.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game this year. He averaged 21.6 points, 4.6 assists and four rebounds in Portland’s five-game series defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round, shooting just 40.6 percent from the field and 16 percent on three-pointers.

LaMarcus Aldridge: I'll Cross That Free Agency Bridge Later On

Apr 30, 2015 12:45 PM

The Portland Trail Blazers were eliminated from the playoffs in Game 5 and they face an uncertain offseason where LaMarcus Aldridge will decide his future.

“I’ll cross that bridge later on,” Aldridge said when asked about his impending free agency.

The Blazers' playoff chances were severely compromised when Wesley Matthews ruptured his Achilles.

“Things were looking like we were going to take over the West,” he said.

“We were one of the top offensive teams in the league,” Aldridge said. “We never found that rhythm. That’s disappointing for us because we know this team is a lot better than what we played.”

Aldridge is expected to draw interest in free agency from the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks.

Lillard: No Reason To Believe Aldridge Won't Re-Sign With Blazers

Apr 27, 2015 4:37 PM

Damian Lillard understands the NBA is a business when it comes to the possibility of LaMarcus Aldridge signing elsewhere in free agency.

"You seen LeBron [James] leave Cleveland and come back to Cleveland," Lillard said. "Guys will do what's best for them. You've got to do what's best for you when you're pursuing a ring or whatever it is."

Lillard is still confident that Aldridge will return to the Portland Trail Blazers.

"I don't have any reason to believe why he wouldn't be back here," Lillard said.

Tim Frazier Named D-League's MVP, Rookie Of The Year

Apr 21, 2015 2:15 PM

Maine Red Claws guard Tim Frazier, currently a member of the Portland Trail Blazers, has been selected as both the 2015 NBA Development League’s Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year, as voted on by the league’s 18 head coaches.

Frazier (6-1, 170, Penn State) played in 41 games for the Red Claws, 40 as a starter, averaging 16.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 9.5 assists, good for second-best in the NBA D-League. Frazier led the NBA D-League with four triple-doubles while also recording 14 double-doubles for Maine. He scored a career-high 34 against the Delaware 87ers on Jan. 3, and led the team in scoring nine times and assists 37 times.

“There’s no question about it, Tim had an MVP-caliber season in Maine this year,” said Malcolm Turner, NBA D-League President. “It takes a special young man to be as consistently dominant as he was this season, and to do it as a rookie is even more impressive. It’s fitting that our coaches recognized his hard work and his talent by selecting him as both the MVP and the Rookie of the Year. We look forward to watching his game continue to mature as his NBA career unfolds.”

Teammate: 50-50 Chance LaMarcus Aldridge Leaves Blazers

Apr 20, 2015 12:14 PM

LaMarcus Aldridge will be a free agent this offseason and he may not be a lock to re-sign with the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Blazers have made the playoffs each of the past two seasons and he forms a strong core with Damian Lillard.

One teammate on the Blazers privately told Jason Quick of the Oregonian that he believes there's a 50-50 chance Aldridge signs elsewhere.

Aldridge could have signed a three-year extension last summer, but he said at the time that he wanted to wait until the 2015 offseason to sign a new five-year deal.

"I don't want it to be perceived that I'm not happy, or I'm not staying on because I'm not signing a three-year deal,'' Aldridge told The Oregonian last July. "It's just financially smarter to wait ... and I'm looking forward to signing the five-year deal when the chance comes."

One teammate said Aldridge will value happiness over money when making his decision, which could be found closer to his family in Texas.
