Monty Williams Expected To Take Job With Spurs

Jul 30, 2016 12:14 AM

Monty Williams has a standing job offer from the San Antonio Spurs that he's likely to accept.

Williams' wife, Ingrid Williams, passed away in a car accident in February. Williams then took a leave of absence from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The specifics of what role Williams would fill and how much time he could commit have not yet been determined, but sources say San Antonio has opened the door to either a coaching and player-development role or a front-office position -- or a hybrid -- depending on what he prefers.

Williams was also previously head coach of the Pelicans.

Manu Ginobili Found 76ers' Pitch Appealing Due To Brett Brown, Size Of Offer

Jul 22, 2016 10:07 AM

Manu Ginobili said his contract talks with the Philadelphia 76ers were genuine and not a negotiating ploy to receive a richer offer from the San Antonio Spurs.

“It was not my main option. I never wanted to leave San Antonio,” Ginobili told The Vertical. “But I had to listen to all the options that are there.”

Philadelphia was offering a two-year contract offer that guaranteed in the first season (between $16 million and $17 million) more than five times what the Spurs initially offered for one year ($3 million).

“The fact that Philadelphia had a great coach and a person I appreciate so much as Brett Brown, made it more appealing in the case the Spurs didn’t happen,” Ginobili told The Vertical. “But the Spurs happened and they always had the priority.”

The Spurs improved their one-year offer to $14 million.

Tim Duncan Waived By Spurs

Jul 12, 2016 1:45 PM

The San Antonio Spurs waived Tim Duncan upon the announcement of his retirement.

Before the start of free agency, Duncan exercised his player option with the Spurs for $5.6 million. Duncan had not yet decided at that point whether he was going to retire.

The Spurs needed to clear a portion of Duncan's salary to create cap space for their free agent moves.

Jason Kidd Regrets Not Signing With Spurs In 2003

Jul 12, 2016 11:46 AM

Jason Kidd continues to wonder what may have happened if he signed with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003 instead of agreeing upon a six-year, $103 million deal with the Nets. Kidd reflected on the decision after Tim Duncan's retirement announcement.

Kidd and the Nets were coming off two straight appearances in the Finals and only met with the Spurs in free agency. Kidd was ready to join the Spurs but his family wanted to stay in New Jersey.

"I thought I was going to be a Spur," Kidd said. "I committed when I was down there on my visit [to San Antonio].

"On my flight home, I think I got cold feet," Kidd continued. "And sometimes I have nightmares about that. Maybe I could have won a championship or two there. But I got really lucky with Dallas and won a championship."

Kidd eventually won a title in 2011 with the Dallas Mavericks.

"It is something that I sometimes regret," Kidd said. "I wanted to see if I could win a championship in San Antonio."

"When you talk about Duncan, you can't say that I got cheated [out of MVP in 2001-02]," Kidd added. "Just coming to second to him was an honor in itself. The biggest disappointment is maybe not joining him, joining San Antonio and trying to win a championship when I had the opportunity as a free agent."
