Malone interested in Raptors coaching vacancy

Apr 19, 2003 8:48 AM

The Associated Press reports that Pacers assistant coach Brendan Malone is interested in the Raptors coaching job.

Malone was the coach for the Raptors in their inaugural season.

"There's a nucleus of a very good basketball team,'' Malone told The Associated Press after Indiana practiced Friday for its first-round playoff series against Boston. "I'd love to have the opportunity to coach that team.''

Interestingly enough, Malone was fired by then General manager Isiah Thomas because of differences in philosophy. However, Thomas hired Malone in 2000 to be an assistant with him in Indiana.

Malone feels he has some unfinished business in Toronto and would like to have another opportunity to work with the team.

"I thought maybe if I was given a couple of more years, I could have had a winning record,'' he said.

"They know who I am,'' Malone said, referring to the Raptors. "I don't know how to go about it. I don't have an agent. (Toronto general manager) Glen Grunwald knows me. I think it would be great again to go back to Toronto, because I really enjoyed my experience there."

Raptors to look at Wiz assistant

Apr 18, 2003 8:50 AM

Steve Wyche of the Washington Post reports that the Toronto Raptors are interested in speaking to Wizards assistant coach Brian James as a possible replacement to recently removed Lenny Wilkens.

The Raptors have yet to seek permission to speak to James, but are expected to at least offer him an interview due to ties he has within the Raptors organization.

Other candidates the Raptors may look into will be former Knick coach Jeff Van Gundy, former Cavalier and Atlanta coach Mike Fratello, and Spurs assistant P.J. Carlesimo.

Wilkens, Raptors agree to part ways

Apr 18, 2003 8:21 AM

Raptors.com reports that Raptors head coach Lenny Wilkens and the team have mutual agreed to go their seperate ways.

Wilkens had one year left on his contract which will be honored by the team.

"This season was a disappointment of the highest order for all of us associated with the Toronto Raptors. In discussions with Lenny about the future direction of the team, it became apparent to both of us that parting company would best serve his interests as well as those of the organization,? said Glen Grunwald, Raptors senior vice president and general manager. ?I want to thank Lenny for his many contributions. He was the right man at the right time three years ago when he brought stability, dignity and leadership to our coaching position. Since then, Lenny has always represented the Raptors and the city of Toronto in a first-class manner in good times and in difficult times. You won?t find a man of greater character than Lenny Wilkens.?

Wilkens, the NBA's all-time leader in wins, compiled a 113-133 record in three seasons as the Raptors head coach.

?I?m proud to have been the head coach here during a time when the organization jumped from being an expansion franchise to being a legitimate contender,? Wilkens said. ?If it wasn?t for the injuries this season we would have continued to have success.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Toronto and very much appreciate the support I?ve received from our fans, who are the most outstanding in the NBA. Their support of us through this season with all the injuries was remarkable.?

Report: Wilkens out as Raptors coach

Apr 17, 2003 8:56 AM

The Score in Toronto is reporting that Lenny Wilkens and the Toronto Raptors have agreed that he will not return to the team as head coach next season.

The following headline was read by some of the posters on our Toronto Raptors board.

"Wilkens and management sign mutual agreement that Wilkens will not coach team next season."

Right now, the details are a bit sketchy but apparently, Wilkens will receive the entire $5 million remaining on his contract.

However, it is known that the Raptor players and Wilkens are scheduled to meet with the media today at 12:30 EST. Raptors GM Glen Grunwald will then address them at 3:30 EST.

The announcement of the agreement could come at that time.

It has been a disappointing season for Wilkens and the Raptors.

Not only did they have the third-worst record in the NBA, but were also the most banged up team in NBA history.

The 2002-03 Raptors broke the NBA?s all-time record for man games lost to injury with 519. That broke the record set by the 1996-97 Boston Celtics, who had 480.

It was so bad that they never dressed a full roster of 12 in any game for the entire season.

If anyone thought a change wasn't coming, it became apparent two nights ago when Grunwald said the following message to the crowd after Toronto's loss in their final home game of the season to Miami.

"All of us in the Raptors organization from the players, coaches, managers and ownership share in your disappointment. We will not stand for this any longer."

Ex-Jazz Center Polynice Begins 2-Day Jail Term

Apr 16, 2003 12:50 PM

Former Utah Jazz center Olden Polynice began a two-day jail term Tuesday for violating his probation in a three-year-old case in which he had pleaded guilty to impersonating a police officer.

The probation violation occurred when Polynice assaulted another golfer at the Old Mill Golf Course last year.

Defense attorney Greg Skordas said Polynice was unprepared for the jail sentence. "He was sad," Skordas told The Tribune. "He took it hard. He felt a sense of loss."
