Raptors Sign Jawai To Guaranteed Contract

Jul 11, 2008 4:14 AM

The Toronto Raptors have not wasted any time, signing second round pick Nathan Jawai to a two year guaranteed contract only 24 hours after the trade with the Indiana Pacers went through, according to the official Australian Basketball League website.

Jawai was part of the Jermaine O'Neal trade and becomes the first Australian indigenous player to make it to the NBA.

"We have agreed to terms with the Toronto Raptors on a guaranteed two-year deal, which is rare for a second round pick and certainly displays the promise they see in Nathan,? Jawai's agent Daniel Moldovan said Wednesday.

"We are thrilled that Nathan has gone to such a first class organisation and that he will be playing behind two of the true superstars of the NBA in Jermaine O'Neal and Chris Bosh. The Raptors are shaping up to be a truly formidable team."

O'Neal Excited About Change Of Scenery

Jul 10, 2008 10:14 AM

Jermaine O'Neal admitted on Wednesday during his introduction to the Raptors that he's excited about the change of scenery, according to USA Today.

O'Neal admitted that he broke down and cried when he learned that he had been traded by the Pacers to the Raptors last month, frustrated by all the off-court distractions and on-court failures of the team.

"It's probably been one of the worst situations any pro team has been through," O'Neal said. "There are a lot more things that went on behind the scenes that kind of wore you down. It wore me down a bit mentally and I started to not really enjoy playing as much as I used to love to play the game. When I got the call from my agent and he told me about the possibility of coming here, it was like a rebirth. Sometimes you lose that love and you need a move or something to get that fire back in you."

Jermaine also conceded the fact that Chris Bosh is the leader of the Raptors.

Jul 9, 2008 1:11 PM

The Indiana Pacers announced Wednesday two trades that bring seven new faces to the team. In a deal with Toronto, the Pacers acquired T.J. Ford, Rasho Nesterovic, Maceo Baston, and Roy Hibbert (the 17th overall pick in June?s NBA draft) for Jermaine O?Neal and Nathan Jawai (the 41st pick in the draft).

?We?re very excited about the trades we made,? said Pacers' President of Basketball Larry Bird. ?We know we got some good character guys and good players. I just want to help the franchise move forward, and we feel with the draft, we know we picked up two good guys that our fans are going to be very supportive of and excited about.?

Added Pacers' Coach Jim O?Brien, ?I think Larry and (General Manager) David Morway did an outstanding job in changing around our basketball team, both with the trades and the picks. Our team will have a completely different look next year. Overall, the seven new players we have give us a completely different look than we had last year, and we have maintained the guys that got the majority of playing time at the end of last season."
