Rudy Gobert Criticizes Unspecified Teammates For Playing Selfishly

Mar 26, 2017 12:03 PM

Rudy Gobert publicly criticized some of his Utah Jazz teammates for playing selfishly during their 108-95 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

"We've got guys that compete, but some of us don't compete. Some of us just think about scoring," Gobert told ESPN after Utah's fourth loss in its past five games. "That's what it is.

"Coach keeps repeating it: We've just got to compete. We're too nice. Those guys, we know they're going to get calls. We've just got to come out aggressive and ready to fight."

"It's something we've talked about," Quin Snyder said. "It's a question for our guys, frankly. We can give enough attention to it and talk about it. Ultimately, when we step on the floor, we have to be ready to play with a level of intensity.

"It's not that we're not playing hard. We don't necessarily play hard together when we need to. I think that type of collective effort, when you get in big games against good teams and physical teams, that's what you need."

Gordon Hayward was not made available to the media after the game.

Gobert did not single out any teammates for criticism, but he did express support for Hayward after Hayward had an off game, going scoreless until less than five minutes remained in the first half. Hayward finished with 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting.

"Gordon is going to be fine," Gobert said. "He's human. There's going to be some games where he don't make shots. I keep telling him to stay aggressive and try to make the right play and everything comes. I think he did a good job in the second half. We've just got to be there for each other."

Gordon Hayward: You Can't Blame Players For Staying Or Changing

Mar 24, 2017 12:10 PM

Gordon Hayward was asked if he thinks loyalty to a team is important after Wednesday's game.

Hayward will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

"You know I think every player has different situations for reasons why they leave or stay,” he said. “I think it's definitely cool when guys play their whole career in one city. I grew up watching the Pacers, and Reggie Miller stayed there his whole career. He was a guy that everybody looked up to, so I think it's definitely cool. But, like I said, every situation is different, every player has different things going on, so you can't blame players one way or the other for staying or changing."

When Hayward was a restricted free agent in 2014, he signed a four-year, $63 million offer sheet with the then-Charlotte Bobcats that the Utah Jazz matched.

The Jazz can offer Hayward a fifth year and also 7.5 percent raises.

Dennis Lindsey: Rudy Gobert's Desire To Be Good As Unique As His Standing Reach

Mar 16, 2017 12:31 PM

The Utah Jazz were struck by how Rudy Gobert wanted to improve, even in pregame warmups when they were scouting him in 2013.

"He was working on completely the wrong stuff," Lindsey said.

Gobert was raw with a 9-foot-7 standing reach.

"I know this sounds crazy, but it's proven to be true to date: His want to be good is as unique as his wingspan and standing reach," Dennis Lindsey said.

Gobert slid in the draft to 27th as he struggled in several workouts.

"He was lost going into that jungle of the workouts," agent Bouna Ndiaye said. "In Chicago, he was bad. He was really bad."

"He likes to play. Like, he enjoys playing," said Alex Jensen, the Jazz assistant coach who works individually with Gobert. "I think a lot of big guys kind of fall into it because of just being big, but he likes to play and he wants to be good. It sounds simple, but it's rare. It's not the norm."

The Jazz paid $3 million to purchase a late first round pick in what was considered a weak draft.

"We got lucky there," Lindsey said. "If we were so smart, we would have moved to the top of the draft."

The Jazz signed Gobert to an extension before the start of the 16-17 season.

"We hope," Lindsey says, "that he's the Utah Jazz version of Bill Russell."

Deron Williams Intrigued By Finishing Career Back With Utah

Mar 2, 2017 10:38 AM

Deron Williams decided to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers after his buyout from the Dallas Mavericks, but he also considered the Utah Jazz.

Williams is intrigued by the possibility of finishing his career with the Jazz. Williams, who was drafted by the Jazz in 2005, still maintains a home in the Salt Lake City area.

Utah inquired about Williams when the Mavs were trying to trade the veteran point guard last week.

Williams was traded by the Jazz to the Brooklyn Nets in 2011.
