Team USA To Loosen Requirements For Inclusion On Olympics Team

Mar 13, 2023 5:19 PM

Team USA is loosening its requirements to play on the Olympics team under Grant Hill.

Hill is in his first year as the national team's managing director after replacing Jerry Colangelo.

Team USA has the World Cup in the Philippines this summer and the Olympics in Paris in 2024.

"There's no commitment necessary, no 'if you want to play in the Olympics, you have to play here,'" Hill said Monday on a video call with reporters. "I understood why that was implemented and I think it was tremendously successful...But we feel like we had to make a change in that regard. So no tryouts, no commitment."

Team USA was already moving in this direction under Colangelo.

With players paying more attention to load management and offseason recovery, the previous demands are a harder sell.

"You have to adapt to the times," Hill said. "If you looked at the NBA, it has changed tremendously. It's changed since I retired in 2013. Every generation's different and it's important for us as leadership, particularly USA Basketball, to recognize that and be willing to adapt with that change."

USA Basketball To Play World Cup Warmups In Abu Dhabi As Potential UAE Investment In NBA Grows

Mar 8, 2023 10:26 AM

USA Basketball has reached a deal with Abu Dhabi to bring Team USA to the Middle East for exhibition games in August, which is another sign that the United Arab Emirates' investment in American basketball could lead to NBA team ownership.

The event is being sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, the government vehicle that made a multiyear deal with the NBA to bring exhibition games to the United Arab Emirates beginning last fall.

USA Basketball will be the host and play Germany on Aug. 18 and Greece on Aug. 20. The showcase is serving as a warmup event for the FIBA World Cup, which will begin the following week in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.

In December, NBA owners approved a plan that would allow foreign sovereign wealth funds to purchase minority stakes of up to 20% in teams.

Abu Dhabi's fund, Mubadala, has shown an interest in potentially making such an investment in an NBA team, according to multiple reports.
