Nash To Oversee Canadian National Team Mini-Camp

Aug 23, 2012 10:55 AM

Steve Nash will help oversee a weekend camp as general manager of Canada’s senior national team.

The camp will feature more than 20 of the top prep school, university and NBA players who will form the core group aimed at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

“This summer we’re going to try to identify — and it’s still in the works — 30 players that we want to target for Rio and try to get them together and start relationships and rapport and start to be able to help them improve,” Nash said when he took over as general manager last spring.

Durant Learned To Focus On 'Little Things' As Member Of Team USA

Aug 22, 2012 11:18 PM

In a recent interview, Kevin Durant described how playing with Team USA taught him to focus on the little things that help win games.

“Just the focus and the energy that you have to have every single day,” Durant said when asked what he learned from his Olympic experience. “The details you have to pay attention to every day. That’s why we won the Gold. For every winning team, it’s the small things that win, not how many points LeBron (James) scores or Kobe (Bryant) scores or me.

“It’s about the deflections we get, the steals, the blocked shots, the charges we take. Small things like that that we do is going to separate us because everybody at this level is good at the major things in the game. That’s what I learned and hopefully we do it in (Oklahoma City) every game.”

Durant led the U.S. in scoring (19.5 ppg) and ranked second in rebounding (5.8 rpg) while averaging 26.0 minutes per contest.

Boeheim Expects Pro Coach To Succeed Krzyzewski

Aug 20, 2012 9:45 PM

Jim Boeheim expects Jerry Colangelo to opt for an NBA guy to succeed Mike Krzyzewski as coach of the U.S. national team.

“I think it could very likely be a pro coach,” Boeheim said. “Doc Rivers is a great coach, Gregg Popovich … they’re great coaches. There are more than enough great coaches in the NBA that could take over. It’s possible that it could be a college coach, but I think it’s more likely to be a pro coach.

“Whoever it is will have a tough assignment,” Boeheim continued. “They’ve got to go to Spain in two years for the World Championship, so that won’t be easy. But I’m sure we’ll still have players that want to play … and we’ll have a good coach and a good staff and it’ll be fun to watch someone else [guide the national team].”

Boeheim recently announced his decision to step down as a Team USA assistant.

LeBron Considering 2016 Olympics

FIBA Confirms No Age Limit For 2016 Olympics

Aug 17, 2012 8:14 PM

FIBA Secretary General and IOC member Patrick Baumann confirmed that there will not be a 23 and under rule change for the 2016 Olympics.

"From a global perspective, the progress of the talent in all other countries doesn't go at the same speed or the same pace as the USA," said Baumann. "They don't all have a school system like the USA. So the ability for the rest of the world to produce a lot of talent is not the same as the USA. As a result of that, lowering the age to U23 at the Olympics could actually widen the divide between the USA and the rest of the world.

"There is also a more general issue of what the Olympic Games represent. The NBA, the IOC and FIBA, we have all earned a lot - not just in financial terms - from professional athletes being at the Olympics since 1992. This is the case with regards to the way basketball has grown, from where we were then to where we are now.

"So it would be premature to make changes in the quality of basketball at the Olympics, especially before having maximised the potential of the World Cup. So it's too early to make any changes in the Olympic program."

FIBA will, however, propose changes to the Olympics for 2016.

"We will certainly submit two proposals," said Baumann. "The first is we want to move from 12 to 16 teams. As a consequence of that we would be able to promote the game in four more countries and reduce the length of the competition.

"The second proposal would be to introduce 3x3 in the Olympics following its successful introduction at the Youth Olympic Games in 2010 in Singapore and the start of our first full 3x3 season this year."

Boeheim: LeBron Could Challenge Jordan As Greatest Player Ever

Aug 14, 2012 9:43 PM

Jim Boeheim went on Colin Cowherd’s radio show and said that he believes LeBron James has a chance to surpass Michael Jordan as the best player ever.

"I've always thought Michael Jordan was the best player that I've ever seen,” Boeheim said. “I always have and I didn't think it was close. I'm not so sure any more. And I love Michael Jordan. I'm not so sure anymore. This guy is 6-foot-9 and 260 pounds, and he's getting better. He works on his game. His shooting is getting better. He's a phenomenal, phenomenal basketball player. I love this game; I love the history of this game. I know we've had great, great players through the years. He's like Magic Johnson with Michael Jordan-type skills as well."

Boeheim said James is a different player now compared to when he joined Team USA in 2005.

"Ten times better player,” Boeheim said. “Some of it is maturity. He's a leader; he was a kid when we first got him. ... He's a 6-9, 260-pound point guard-forward-center. He guarded the post guys. They always say a guy can guard five positions, I've never seen that. I've heard about it. This guy can guard five guys. He can guard your center, he can guard your small forward, big forward, point guard, two guard. You put him on anybody and he can guard them."

Olympics Considering Three-On-Three In 2016

Aug 14, 2012 9:24 AM

The Olympics are considering three-on-three at the 2016 Olympics.

FIBA wants to create a comprehensive ranking system that would determine the best three-on-three teams in the world.

"Like volleyball has beach volleyball, swimming has synchronized swimming, we want three-on-three to be part of it," Secretary-general Patrick Baumann said.

Baumann reasoned that three-on-three would allow more countries to experience the Olympics and help FIBA expand basketball's global popularity.

Riley: LeBron 'Completes Tremendous Turnaround' With Gold Medal

Aug 13, 2012 3:56 PM

Pat Riley and Micky Arison were relieved to see LeBron James win his second gold medal, as well as endure the Olympics without injury.

"I think both Micky and I had a great sigh of relief that he got through the Olympics without getting hurt or anything happening and also winning the gold medal," said Riley.

"It just sort of completes a tremendous turnaround for him. He did it, and he did it by looking at himself in the eye, looking in the mirror, taking stock of what it was that he may not have done last year, on the court, off the court, and this year he had a perfect run.

"We're happy for him. We love him to death, obviously."

The Heat begin training camp during the last week of September.

"We just want him to get home and get some rest," he said. "And in a short six weeks, he's going to be back at it in training camp."

Boeheim To Step Down As USA Basketball Assistant Coach

Aug 13, 2012 10:28 AM

Jim Boeheim will step down from his role as assistant coach of the U.S. Olympic team.

“I think I’ve really learned a lot over these last five years working with the Olympic team and as a result I believe I’ve improved as a coach,” Boeheim relayed after Team USA’s 107-100 gold medal win over Spain. “Some of the offense we use at Syracuse is stuff from Mike D’Antoni (another of Mike Krzyzewski’s assistants). Some of our defensive stuff we do is based on stuff I’ve learned because of this. There’s no question I’m better off for having been a part of Team USA.

“If you’re not learning something on your job, whatever it is, then you’re not getting better. And if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse. I think that’s true of everybody. When you’re too old to keep learning, it’s time to get out.

“But I’m done. Mike Krzyzewski says he’s done. Kobe Bryant says he’s done. And I’m saying this is it for me. But this is a good way to go out. It’s been great. It’s been a great run. But five straight summers, giving up 40 days each is enough. Two hundred days over five years is enough. It’s time for somebody else to experience what I’ve been allowed to experience.”

Colangelo: LeBron Different Player, Person Than In 2006

Aug 12, 2012 7:40 PM

USA Basketball warned LeBron James prior to the 2008 Olympics that he would need to "grow up, treat people respect and commit to treating (it) seriously."

James and Kevin Durant were easily Team USA's best players throughout the Olympics.

"LeBron James is a different player and a different person than he was in '06, and I say that with exclamation marks," said Jerry Colangelo. "He's matured incredibly as a person, player and leader."

James had 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists against Spain on Sunday.

"He's matured incredibly as a person, a player and a leader," Colangelo said. "He never had someone to emulate in his life, and (Mike Krzyzewski) fit into a great role. He did the rest himself. He's grown so much. So much."
