Frank Hughes of the News Tribune reports: Any discussion between the Sonics and the Portland Trail Blazers regarding a trade for point guard Gary Payton has come to an end, according to a source.

Multiple sources said the sides have discussed several packages to bring Payton to Portland, but the Blazers' signing of Ruben Patterson on Monday has caused irreparable friction between the teams.

The Sonics, sources say, were discussing a possible sign-and-trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers that would have brought center Michael Doleac and forward Matt Harpring to Seattle for Patterson. But Portland outmaneuvered the Sonics when it swept in and tendered Patterson an offer, rendering Seattle's discussions with Cleveland moot and angering Sonics management
