Guess who used to dominate whom in college?

Evan Eschmeyer played four seasons at Northwestern (1995-99) at the same time Calvin Booth was playing his four seasons at Penn State. And Eschmeyer, believe it or not, used to win the battles over Booth in their head-to-head matchups.

"That's all history, that's all in the past," Eschmeyer said. "That doesn't matter anymore. When I'm 50, I can look back and talk about that, but right now I've got to worry about the next 10 years."

In addition to their college hookups, Eschmeyer and Booth will forever be linked because of what happened over the summer. When Booth surprisingly decided to leave the Mavericks' seemingly comfortable nest and sign a six-year, $34 million, unrestricted free-agent contract with Seattle, it left Dallas mired in murky waters.

In other Mav news, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he never considered asking the NBA for a medical exception for point guard Muggsy Bogues, whom he doesn't think will play this season because of bad knees.

"We would only get half of his salary," Cuban said, "and there wasn't really anybody out there for that kind of money."

Bogues is slated to earn $1.5 million this season. Cuban said he's still trying to decide whether to waive the 14-year veteran before the season or use his salary in a possible trade.
