Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports: Desperate for a point guard with offensive skills, the Heat on Tuesday re-signed Mike James, who flopped during training camp after flashing considerable potential during the summer.

The Heat opted to add James rather than make a trade or sign free agent point guards Robert Pack, Matt Maloney or Sherman Douglas.

Although Indiana point guard Travis Best -- an impending free agent -- would fit Miami's need for a scoring point guard, Pacers president Donnie Walsh said he hasn't heard from the Heat since it inquired about Best during the summer. ``We haven't given thought to trading him,'' Walsh said.

The Heat is not believed to be interested in Denver's Nick Van Exel, who ranks seventh in the NBA in scoring but has a reputation of being a malcontent. Miami had shown some interest in Seattle's Shammond Williams, a good shooter who lost his backup job to rookie Earl Watson.

Also in this article, Jackson mentions that Heat assistant Stan Van Gundy is the likely successor to Pat Riley.
