Robert Sturges, a minority owner of the Miami Heat, is assembling an investment group to buy the Orlando Magic, his consultants said in a statement today.

Sturges retained Game Plan LLC, a Boston-based investment bank specializing in the sports industry, to advise him on the bid. Due to NBA rules preventing dual franchise ownership, Sturges would have to sell his interest in the Heat if he buys the Magic.

Magic owner Rich DeVos, co-founder of Amway Corp., told the Orlando Sentinel recently that he would sell the team after he failed to reach an agreement with city officials to build a new arena.

Ex-NFL player Calvin Hll, the father of injured Magic forward Grant Hill, is also putting a group together to bid on the team, as is former Madison Square Garden President Dave Checketts.

The Magic are worth $176 million, 22nd in the 29-team NBA, according to Forbes magazine. DeVos bought the team for $85 million in 1991.

Micky Arison, chairman of cruise line operator Carnival Corp., is managing partner of the Heat.
