84

It was the Jazz's turn Wednesday night, and they probably had an inkling soon after the start of their 92-84 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

There was rookie Jarron Collins, opening the game by nailing two 15-foot shots over Shaquille O'Neal.

There was John Stockton, the reluctant scorer, driving to the basket for 10 points in a 2 1/2-minute span of the first quarter.

There were the Lakers, throwing the ball all over the sold-out Delta Center and eventually finishing with 24 turnovers.

There were O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, not getting any help from their disinterested-looking teammates.

Still, with 2:20 left, Utah's 13-point lead was down to 84-80. The Lakers seemed poised for the same kind of comeback that netted them two narrow wins over the Jazz in early November.

Instead, Karl Malone calmly lined up a three-pointer as the shot clock was about to expire and buried the shot -- giving Utah an 87-80 lead and stopping Los Angeles' rally before the Lakers could apply any more collar-tightening pressure.
