Flu-stricken Karl Malone spent Friday night at the Jazz's hotel, trying to get better.
His teammates spent the evening at the Palace of Auburn Hills, doing the same thing.
The Jazz had lost four straight and fallen to eighth place in the Western Conference. They were in danger of getting whiplash from looking over their shoulders at the Los Angeles Clippers, who are chasing them for the final playoff spot.
This morning, however, the Jazz feel much better.
Playing without Malone for only the eighth time in his career, the Jazz parlayed Andrei Kirilenko's career-high 27 points and a determined effort in the final moments into a 100-97 victory over Detroit.
"We tried to do the right thing most of the night," coach Jerry Sloan said. "At least, we played hard."
Utah is now 35-30 after one of its most well-rounded performances of the season. Nearly everyone who played made a contribution.
Kirilenko scored 20 points in the first half, made 11 of 15 shots and played a career-high 44 minutes.
Donyell Marshall posted 16 points and 10 rebounds. He had 10 points and four rebounds in the fourth quarter.
