The New York Knicks are considering Indiana Pacers assistant coach Brendan Malone for a similar position on Don Chaney's staff.

Malone joined Isiah Thomas' staff in 2000 after spending the previous four years on the Knicks' bench. He has 19 years of NBA experience as an assistant, head coach and consultant.

The Knicks are not renewing the contracts of assistants Tom Thibodeau and Steve Clifford, who were hired by former coach Jeff Van Gundy. Former Pacer Herb Williams will be retained.

Malone's contract with the Pacers expires this summer. He could not be reached for comment. The Knicks asked Pacers president Donnie Walsh for permission to talk to Malone but were not required to do so.

"There is interest by New York in Brendan," Walsh said Friday. "I haven't had a chance to talk to Isiah about it yet."
