The Miami Heat has requested that Ron Slay return to work out with team officials for the rest of the summer and plans to offer him a contract, Slay's agent, Shedrick Howard, said yesterday.

Slay, a former Pearl-Cohn High and UT star, would still have to make the 12-man roster. He was signed as a free agent after not being drafted and played in the recent summer league games for the Heat.

Howard spoke with Heat general manager Randy Pfund yesterday concerning Slay, who was named last season by the Associated Press as the SEC's Player of the Year.

''He has an opportunity,'' Howard said. ''They want to work with him this summer because he's learning to play a new position.''
