Kenyon Martin's first chance to extend his contract will come today, and he and his agent plan to ask for the maximum the Nets could offer: roughly $87 million for six years.

Whether they'll get it is another question.

"I'm sure we'll be talking," said Brian Dyke, Martin's agent. "Kenyon and I are familiar with what's going on with the team and with management. Rod and I have a very good relationship. I'm sure we'll have a nice conversation."

Martin is still under contract for the 2003-04 season for $5.1 million. His salary for the coming year will not change no matter what agreement Dyke and Nets president Rod Thorn meet.

The extension Martin could sign would begin in the 2004-05 season and last six more seasons, meaning Martin would be under contract with the Nets for the NBA maximum allowable seven years. Martin's maximum salary would not be known until next July, when the salary cap is calculated, but it would likely start at roughly $11 million and escalate to roughly $19 million.
