He isn't the free-agent point guard the Hawks have deemed their "first priority" this offseason, but on Thursday, Jacque Vaughn became the first free agent to sign with the team.

Vaughn returns to the Hawks after spending a season with the Orlando Magic, where he appeared in 80 games and averaged 5.9 points, 2.9 assists and 1.5 rebounds in 21 minutes.

"It's a good thing I'm back," Vaughn said. "It feels good to be in familiar surroundings, but it's a bit of a fresh start for me."

The 6-foot-1 point guard accepted a one-year deal and he will likely back up Jason Terry, the Hawks' restricted free-agent guard who has been tendered a one-year qualifying offer but still seeks a multiyear deal. In six NBA seasons with the Utah Jazz, Hawks and Magic, Vaughn has career averages of 5.1 points and 2.9 assists in 386 games, shooting 43 percent from the field.

"Having an experienced backup point guard is very important for us," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "I think he's a great fit for our team."
