Freedom of speech and money seem to be the determining factors in ending Marv Albert?s long reign as the Knicks? lead play-by-play broadcaster.

Garden executives wanted to brighten Albert?s often critical message to Knick fans about the state of the team and the quality of its play.  Albert considered this an attempt at censorship and was unwilling to agree to any such terms.

The Garden also wanted to cut Albert?s $1 million salary.  MSG Network is losing money and is cutting costs, including the salaries of its top employees.

Mike Breen will take over the television broadcasts.

The YES Network is reportedly trying to lure Albert to the New Jersey Nets broadcasting booth, and Albert may also pursue work with the Los Angeles Lakers.
