Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports chronicles the many machinations that took place behind the scenes of LeBron James' free agency.

A top front-office executive believes the NBA league office must investigate whether Pat Riley and the Miami Heat organization made promises of employment and benefits to members of James' inner circle.

"The bigger issue is salary-cap circumvention," the executive said. "You can't promise jobs or preferential services outside of a contract or a job for a friend. If that's part of the deal, it's a violation."

Wojnarowski writes that James never intended to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers after his contract expired.

Among other details, the story also reveals that James felt that Derrick Rose should have actively recruited him to sign with Chicago, something the Bulls' young point guard did not do.
