Kyrie Irving had a protective boot removed from his injured right foot Friday, but coach Mike Krzyzewski said he isn’t expecting Irving back this season.

“We’re not expecting him to play,” Krzyzewski said. “That’s not in our crosshairs or sight or whatever. We just want him to get well. We have a responsibility that whatever his future might hold, that we take care of his future. That’s the commitment we give every kid that comes through our program.”

Krzyzewski said Irving will begin a few basketball-related activities at a slow tempo.

“It’s just unfortunate that a guy who could have been the best player in the country was not given an opportunity to see if he could end up being that way,” Krzyzewski said.
