Bucks Internally Discussed Trade For John Collins

Jun 27, 2023 5:56 PM

The Milwaukee Bucks have a pair of key free agents in Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez, but they have also been involved in trade discussions for Bradley Beal. The Bucks also reportedly internally considered a trade for John Collins, who was moved this week by the Atlanta Hawks to the Utah Jazz.

"A team I heard at least had some relatively serious internal discussions about 'Should we wade into the John Collins thing?'" said Zach Lowe. "And I don't know if they contacted Atlanta or how serious it got, was Milwaukee. And that's interesting to me because I do think Milwaukee is looking around for, like, 'Can we get a little just injection of randomness? An injection of, like, balance and athleticism. And just change. Maybe just change more than anything else. I don't think it went anywhere serious.

"I think Phoenix even looked at him this time around and just doesn't have anything left after trading for [Bradley] Beal."

Mavericks' Trade With Hawks For Clint Capela Broke Down Over Josh Green

Jun 27, 2023 10:41 AM

The Dallas Mavericks pursued a trade of Clint Capela from the Atlanta Hawks leading up to the draft, sources tell Marc Stein of Substack.

The Hawks either wanted to send John Collins instead of Capela, or receive Josh Green back from the Mavericks in order to send out Collins. Capela is signed through the 24-25 season and is represented by Darren Matsubara and Jason Ranne of Wasserman.

The Mavericks objected to both asks from the Hawks, who traded Collins to the Utah Jazz on Monday.

The Mavericks also discussed a trade for Deandre Ayton with the Phoenix Suns.

Jazz Acquire John Collins From Hawks For Rudy Gay, Future 2nd Rounder

Jun 26, 2023 1:49 PM

The Utah Jazz have agreed to acquire John Collins from the Atlanta Hawks for Rudy Gay and a future second round pick. The Jazz and Hawks discussed versions of a Collins' trade for over a year.

Collins has three years and $78 million remaining on his contract.

The trade creates a $25.3 million trade exception for the Hawks. The Hawks now will avoid the possibility of being a second apron team and project to be below the luxury tax for 23-24.

Hawks Have Mandate To Get Out Of Luxury Tax

Jun 24, 2023 8:43 PM

The Atlanta Hawks have committed a lot of long-term salary to a team that has been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the last two seasons. Now, Hawks ownership has given their new front office a mandate to get out of the luxury tax for the upcoming season.

Atlanta is poised to hit free agency about $5.5 million into the tax. The Hawks only have one open roster spot to fill at the moment and will do so by signing first-round draft pick Kobe Bufkin. That will leave Atlanta a move, or two, shy of dipping under the tax line.

Dejounte Murray is up for a new contract in the summer of 2024. Onyeka Okongwu and Saddiq Bey are both extension-eligible this summer. Re-signing even two of those three key rotation players would likely have the Hawks deep into the tax, unless they are able to shed some salary. For new Hawks GM Landry Fields, that process will apparently start with this offseason.

Hawks Have Tried To Trade For Pascal Siakam

Jun 24, 2023 2:06 PM

The Atlanta Hawks have been working the phones leading up to the start of NBA free agency. One Hawks target has been Pascal Siakam of the Toronto Raptors. Toronto hasn't been moved by Atlanta's offers for Siakam to this point.

The Hawks and Dallas Mavericks also held trade talks ahead of the NBA Draft. Atlanta wanted to move John Collins and the 15th pick for Davis Bertans and the 10th pick. When the Mavericks asked for Clint Capela instead, the Hawks pivoted to asking for Josh Green and talks ceased.

Atlanta also looked at moving up to the 5th (Detroit Pistons) or 7th (initially Indiana Pacers) pick. The Hawks offers reportedly included DeAndre Hunter and the 15th pick.

Hawks Could Have Dejounte Murray On Trade Block

Jun 22, 2023 9:50 PM

The Atlanta Hawks are reportedly under a mandate from ownership to get under the luxury tax and have been active in trade talks. The Hawks are not expected to entertain a trade of Trae Young, but Dejounte Murray could be available.

"One guy I haven't heard in trade rumors is Trae Young," said Brian Windhorst. on the Hoop Collective livestream during the draft.

"What about Dejounte Murray?" asked Kevin Pelton.

"One guy I haven't heard in trade rumors is Trae Young," replied Windhorst after clearing his throat.

Murray will be a free agent in 2024 and figures to receive a max or near-max contract.

Pacers Have Held Trade Talks On De'Andre Hunter, Jonathan Kuminga

Jun 22, 2023 11:16 AM

The Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks made progress on a trade of De'Andre Hunter before talks fell apart this week, sources tell Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.

The Pacers have been seeking a trade for a big wing to add to their backcourt core of Tyrese Haliburton and Bennedict Mathurin.

The Hawks have looked for ways to jump up from No. 15 into the top-10 of the draft, but the Pacers were not willing to trade No. 7 in those talks for Hunter.

Hunter signed a four-year, $95 million contract extension with the Hawks last offseason that begins in 23-24.

The Pacers have also contacted the Golden State Warriors on Jonathan Kuminga, while they have also been linked with Harrison Barnes, Kyle Kuzma and Grant Williams in free agency.

Quin Snyder Claims He Doesn't Have Ultimate Control Over Hawks' Roster

Jun 17, 2023 10:04 PM

Quin Snyder has denied prior reports that he maintains ultimate control over the roster of the Atlanta Hawks.

Landry Fields runs the front office of the Hawks and has only been a basketball executive for a few years.

Snyder maintains he is merely part of the Hawks’ “collaborative process."

“The only role Landry and Kyle (Korver, assistant GM) and I talked about when I agreed to come to Atlanta is me coaching the team,” Snyder said.“That’s what I like and it’s also what I’m passionate about. Any speculation about me having a more significant role than providing input on personnel decisions is just not accurate. I have total confidence in Landry and his group to make those decisions. As I see it, my job is to maximize the potential of the personnel, whatever the personnel is. That’s where my focus lies. That speculation is erroneous.”

Snyder is effectively above Fields and answers only to owner Tony Kessler.

“That’s just a clever way of saying I have control even though I’m telling you I don’t," Snyder told The Athletic. "It’s a way of saying I’m going to exert influence and that’s not true. That’s not healthy. It’s not the partnership I wanted. I want to be supportive. I want to provide input and then I want to do my job. I understand what you’re saying. But it’s just not accurate.”
