Cavs, Rockets, Heat, Warriors, Spurs Interested In Timofey Mozgov

Jun 30, 2016 1:10 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs are among the teams interested in signing Mozgov.

Mozgov had an excellent 14-15 season after coming over to the Cavaliers in a trade from the Denver Nuggets, but he struggled to get all the way healthy in 15-16 after offseason knee surgery.

The Cavs primarily used Tristan Thompson, Kevin Love and Channing Frye at the center spot in the playoffs.

Over-36 Rule Currently Prevents LeBron James From Signing $200M Deal In 2017

Dec 22, 2016 3:52 PM

LeBron James has been widely expected to sign a five-year deal worth $200 million in the summer of 2017 after going through a series of one-plus-one deals since returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014.

But multiple league executives say the current collective bargaining agreement makes that type of deal impossible due to the "over 36 rule." The rule prevents teams from giving four- or five-year deals to players who are unlikely to play the life of the deal with no salary cap consequences.

For a player who is 36 years old in the last season of a five-year deal, his final annual salary is applied proportionally to previous seasons and counts toward the team’s cap.

James is vice president of the NBPA and could look to exercise his influence on a change to the obscure rule.

Under current rules, James could sign a four-year, $156.8 million contract with Cleveland in 2017.

LeBron James Opts Out Of $24M Contract With Cavs For 16-17

Jun 29, 2016 1:19 AM

LeBron James will not exercise his $24 million player option with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 16-17 season to become a free agent.

James can re-sign with the Cavaliers and said last week he has no intentions of leaving Cleveland again.

"I love it here in Cleveland. I have no intentions of leaving," James told ESPN's Dave McMenamin during the Cavaliers' championship parade. "There are some technicalities to take care of I'll leave up to my agent. That's right from the horse's mouth."

Rich Paul gave no insight on Tuesday evening on the type of contract James will seek or his timetable for re-signing.

If James takes another one-year contract from the Cavs, he would make $27.5 million for next season. This is because the Cavs don't have salary-cap space and don't have James' full Bird rights, which limits the size of the raise he can get.

Cavs Exercise Option On Jordan McRae

Jun 28, 2016 1:39 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers will exercise their team option on Jordan McRae for the 16-17 season.

McRae's contract won't be fully guaranteed at just under $1 million.

McRae was signed to a 10-day contract in February and the Cavaliers were impressed with him in practice.

McRae scored 36 points in the regular season finale this season and also scored 61 points in a D-League game.

Cavs Intend To Keep Core Together For Title Defense

Jun 27, 2016 11:23 PM

David Griffin anticipates the Cleveland Cavaliers defending their title with their same core.

There has been speculation that the Cavaliers could listen to trade offers for Kevin Love.

"We do intend to keep this group together and see what we're capable of," Griffin said.

‎"I think our best basketball's in front of us because we finally organically grew to the point that we were ready to achieve something together," Griffin said. "And so I expect you're going to see better play from Kyrie Irving, who I think took a huge jump both as an individual talent and a winner throughout these playoffs. [And] I think Kevin's fit with us is much more clearly defined."

The Cavaliers have six free agents, most notably LeBron James, J.R. Smith and Matthew Dellavedova.

LeBron James Withdraws From Olympics

Jun 23, 2016 5:11 PM

LeBron James has informed USA Basketball he will not play in the 2016 Olympics.

James had played in each of the previous three Olympics for the United States.

James cited the amount of court time he's logged with six straight trips to The Finals.

James' agent Rich Paul informed Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo Thursday of James' decision. James contacted Mike Krzyzewski Thursday.

"I could use the rest," James told cleveland.com.

James stayed relatively healthy this season and the thought of him even playing in the Olympics a year was almost unfathomable.

Rival Teams Can Offer LeBron James $3M More Than Cavs

Jun 23, 2016 12:25 PM

LeBron James confirmed on Wednesday he plans to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

James will not pick his player option for next season at $24 million and will again sign a one-year deal. James plans to wait until 2017 when the salary cap will be even higher and a potential new CBA will enable him to sign one of the largest deals in sports history.

The most the Cavaliers can offer because they don't have salary cap space and also don't have his full Bird rights is $27.5 million.

There are more than 20 teams that can pay James $30.8 million for next season. The cap is jumping so significantly that the max contract parameters exceed the 20 percent raise the Cavs can offer James. There has never been a situation like this before in the history of the NBA.
