Rockets Expect To Be NBA's Most Unpredictable Team

Sep 26, 2012 2:39 PM

The Houston Rockets have remade much of their roster over the past few years and are now one of the youngest teams in the NBA.

“I think we’re probably going to be the hardest team to know where we’re going to end up in the league,” general manger Daryl Morey said. “Really, I think we’re going to learn a lot about all the players in their first, second and third year. Frankly, the only known commodities are Kevin Martin and Carlos Delfino.”

The Rockets' marketing slogan is "A New Age".

“If you’re a championship contender, you want to feel like you know what is going to happen,” Morey said. “If you are a team trying to get back to that status, you want a lot of unknowns, a lot of guys with talent. The worst thing to be is to very consistently win 35 games. We won’t do that. Our goal is to get into playoff contention.

How that will happen will be hard to know. It will be who steps up from this group.

“I think we know pretty much everyone we’ve got has shown some sort of elite skill on some level. Really, what our team comes down to is can they add to those one or two skills into (becoming) an all-around player that helps us win at a very high level.”

Morey says that this overhaul doesn't represent a change in philosophy.

“Ever since Yao Ming went down, we’ve been very consistent,” Morey said. “Every move, every player is someone who can develop into an All-Star or gives us the flexibility through free agency or trade to add an All-Star-level guy.”

Jeremy Lin Spent Offseason Watching Film Of Himself, Nash, Felton, Others

Sep 21, 2012 4:40 PM

Jeremy Lin was recently asked which aspects of his game has he critiqued when examining film from last season.

"Definitely I find myself in the air too much," said Lin. "I need to stay on the ground and not get caught in bad situations. I have to cut down on lazy passes. Coach (Kevin) McHale calls them “same plane” passes where it’s one spot and I just fire in a direct line; I have to use more deception and different angles. Then I just have to solidify my left hand and dribbling and keeping guys from reaching in. Those things accounted for most of my turnovers last year."

Lin has also spent a lot of time watching film of other point guards.

"I’ve watched everybody and some of the names might be shocking, but the thing is every point guard does something better than me, so the key is learning from whatever that is. Players that I’ve watched – the obvious ones: Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Steve Nash, John Stockton, Gary Payton. And then you can go on to the ones who have very specialized skills: Juan Carlos Navarro and then Chris Duhon and Raymond Felton. They do things that are really, really good and better than me that other people might not see."

Lin was also asked how he will define whether the 12-13 season is successful.

"If we as a team can work as hard as we can, but also to build the right culture – that would be a success for me. Obviously we want to make the playoffs. But if we don’t make the playoffs, if we’re close to making the playoffs but we had a lot of adversity or injuries or different things that we had to get through, and we still manage to establish a good culture and build and get better – I think that’s a success."

Toyota Center To Unveil Biggest Scoreboard Of Any North American Arena

Sep 5, 2012 8:22 PM

The Toyota Center, home to the Houston Rockets, will unveil a $15 million scoreboard billed as the largest in any North American arena.

“We wanted to make sure we created a better experience,” Rockets CEO Tad Brown said. “We think this is going to put us on another level.”

“This thing will be like an IMAX movie theater,” senior production manager Joe Abercrombie said. “Our approach is changing to a more cinematic approach for everything from our intros to our pregame videos to our timeout videos. We want everything to feel like you’re watching a short film. The board is just a board, a piece of equipment. What’s played on the board — that falls on our shoulders."

Morey Reiterates Desire To Add Franchise-Caliber Player

Sep 2, 2012 12:01 PM

Daryl Morey is still seeking a cornerstone player to build around.

Over the summer, Morey signed Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik to sizeable contracts and selected Royce White, Terrence Jones and Jeremy Lamb in the first round of the draft.

“We’re always looking for opportunities to upgrade our team,” Morey said. “We really like that we have Jeremy [Lin] and the other young players that we have and the other young players improving over time.

“We did feel like, where we were at, every player needed to have star potential — like we feel like most of our young guys have — or give us the [salary] cap flexibility and the room to go sign a big-time star if needed.

“We moved pretty much everyone to do that, and I think that’s why we had to make a tough decision on Luis Scola [amnesty clause] and some of the other veterans we didn’t bring back. But we felt like it was the best decision.”

In addition to amnestying Scola, Morey traded Courtney Lee (to the Celtics) as well as Samuel Dalembert (Milwaukee) and Kyle Lowry (Toronto) to clear cap space and perhaps attract a superstar in free agency next summer.

“You can’t win the championship without having a very high-level player,” Morey said. “We didn’t have that. We’re hoping our young guys can grow into that or we have the cap room and tradeability to add that.”
