Jan 28, 2006 2:09 AM

Jefferson Not Ready To Get Back In Lineup

Jan 15, 2006 7:08 AM

Richard Jefferson shot before the game and felt much better than he expected. But still not good enough to play.

So Jefferson, who admitted he tried to do too much too soon, sat his third straight game with a back problem that surfaced as spasms last Sunday in Toronto. Jefferson is aiming for tomorrow's home game against Conference rival Indiana.

"It's almost gone completely gone, but I feel it a little bit," said Jefferson, who underwent an MRI that was negative for structural damage.

"And just feeling it a little bit, if it does come back, then you lose another week. So I'm just going to try to take a couple of more days off and give it a serious try against Indiana. ...

"It's so much better than it was the last few days. It felt really good after that practice we had [Wednesday], then I tried to do more stuff when we were still in San Antonio and it went backward. That was frustrating. It went backward because I did a little too much and didn't give it enough time to rest. So that's what set me back

Jefferson Sits With Back Spasms

Jan 11, 2006 5:45 AM

Richard Jefferson watched a clip of Tracy McGrady being wheeled off on a stretcher Sunday night at the Toyota Center in Houston, and he immediately sympathized.

"I feel his pain," said the Nets' second-leading scorer, whose back spasms-- the same ailment that has sidelined T-Mac and Kenyon Martin in the past few days -- made him a scratch in last night's 96-91 loss to the Spurs. "Everyone knows, especially an athlete, that your back is the core of everything. And you're so finely tuned, that whenever you can't move something, it's excruciating pain."

So Jefferson has been taking anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers, and he has been getting regular massage therapy to relieve the pain he has felt since Sunday afternoon. As of last night, he was at roughly 50 percent.

The timing is bad, though, which was why he looked so miserable.

"These are the games you live for. These are the games you get excited about, that you kind of mark on your schedule," he said. "So it's frustrating, but for the better of the team we'll take it by ear."

Carter Beats Raptors At Buzzer

Jan 8, 2006 8:21 PM

Vince Carter stuck it to his former fans -- then called it his greatest shot ever.

Carter made a fadeaway 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left and finished with 42 points against his old team Sunday, leading New Jersey past the Toronto Raptors 105-104 for the Nets' 10th straight victory.

Carter scored 24 points in the fourth quarter and was booed every time he touched the ball, but he silenced the crowd with his spectacular winning shot. After Toronto's Jose Calderon missed his second free throw, Carter hit a 3-pointer from about 4 feet beyond the arc. Jason Kidd leapt into his arms after the shot.

"That's definitely number one," Carter said. "The atmosphere, the emotion, the hostility in the arena, it was a fun game."

New Jersey coach Lawrence Frank told Carter to go for two points and the tie, but Carter wanted no part of that.

"I said, 'Coach, I'm going for the win," Carter said. "And it went in."

Raptors' Peterson Ejected After Slapping Carter

Jan 8, 2006 8:20 PM

Toronto Raptors forward Morris Peterson was ejected from Sunday's game against the New Jersey Nets after slapping former teammate Vince Carter in the face.

Peterson got a technical for arguing a no-call late in the first half. About a minute later, Carter playfully slapped his ex-teammate in the face. An annoyed Peterson then slapped Carter.

Official Steve Javie didn't see the Carter slap, but he saw Peterson's and ejected him.

Carter, who is friends with Peterson, went to Javie to argue the call but to no avail.

Carter played for the Raptors from 1998-99 until being traded to the Nets in December 2004.

Kidd May Pass On USA

Jan 8, 2006 6:15 AM

Jason Kidd wants to win gold again. He wants to represent his country. But he also craves an NBA championship.
That's why Kidd has yet to make a decision on whether to join Team USA and commit his next three summers to Jerry Colangelo.

Kidd spoke with the managing director of USA Basketball on Thursday about going for his second gold medal but still is undecided. He's not sure if he wants to sacrifice three offseasons of rest as he gets older.

"I wanted to get all the information about the three-year commitment," said the 32-year-old Kidd, whose Nets look to extend their winning streak to 10 today in Toronto. "I told him I wanted to talk it over with Joumana (his wife) and see what we will decide on."

Colangelo wants to unveil his roster during All-Star weekend in mid-February. The point guard says he will not take that long to make up his mind.
