Marcus Morris, Jae Crowder Fined, Elfrid Payton, Marko Guduric, Jaren Jackson Suspended

Jan 30, 2020 8:34 PM

Elfrid Payton, Marko Guduric and Jaren Jackson Jr. have each been suspended one game without pay and Marcus Morris Sr. and Jae Crowder have each been fined for their roles in an on-court incident.

The incident, which began when Payton shoved Crowder to the floor, occurred with 48.1 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter of the Grizzlies’ 127-106 win over the Knicks on Jan. 29 at Madison Square Garden.

Payton, who was assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 and ejected from the game, has been suspended one game without pay for shoving Crowder to the floor while Crowder was in mid-air, for escalating the altercation, and for inappropriate post-game comments. Crowder, who was given a technical foul and ejected from the game, has been fined $25,000 for escalating the on-court altercation by, among other things, shoving Payton. Morris, who received a technical foul and was ejected from the game, has been fined $35,000 for escalating an on-court altercation by shoving Morant and for offensive and derogatory comments made to the media following the game. Guduric and Jackson have each been suspended one game without pay for leaving the bench area during an on-court altercation.

Guduric and Jackson will serve their suspensions Friday when the Grizzlies play the New Orleans Pelicans at Smoothie King Center. Payton will serve his suspension Saturday when the Knicks visit the Indiana Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Elfrid Payton On Last-Minute Jae Crowder Shot: 'Don't Disrespect The Game Like That'

Jan 30, 2020 3:13 AM

Elfrid Payton, Marcus Morris, and Jae Crowder were all ejected with 48 seconds left in the Memphis Grizzlies' 127-106 win over the New York Knicks.

Crowder attempted a 3-point shot with the Grizzlies up 124-106 in the game. Payton showed Crowder to the ground, resulting in both benches clearing.

Payton said he had no regrets over his actions.

"That shot was disrespectful. I'm standing on that. I'd a did it again. Doesn't matter who took that shot. Don't disrespect the game like that," said Payton.

Morris called out Crowder for being unprofessional following the game.

"He plays the game a different way. He's got a lot of female tendencies on the court, flopping and throwing his head back the entire game. It's a man's game and you just get tired of it. When you step back and shoot a 3 ... and like rub it in ... he's unprofessional. He's soft. His game is soft. He's very womanlike," said Morris.

Morris tweeted an apology for using the term "female tendencies."

Crowder was unavailable for comment after the game.

Knicks Partner With Marketing Agency To Help Improve Brand

Jan 25, 2020 12:01 AM

The New York Knicks partnered with Translation, a marketing agency founded by Steve Stoute, to help improve their brand.

Stoute is a former executive of several music labels, as well as the former manager of Nas and Mary J. Blige.

In discussing his branding strategy, Stoute said that it was important to separate the Knicks brand with James Dolan's personal brand.

“His brand, and the New York Knicks brand, and MSG, stand on their own. That’s the way it has to be," said Stoute.

Translation has previously worked on State Farm's "Cliff Paul" and Budweiser's "Made in America" campaigns.

“We have a ways to go. People can say what they want, but the world knows when you get it right -- when the New York team is winning -- basketball is better. When the New York Knicks are right, the NBA is a better place. That is the opportunity," added Stoute.

Knicks Front Office Expected Team To Make Playoffs This Season

Jan 24, 2020 2:17 AM

Members of the New York Knicks front office told players during a team meeting that they expected the team to make the playoffs this season, sources told Ian Begley of SNY.

The front office also told players entering free agency in 2020 that they would be judged on the team's win-loss record as opposed to individual stats.

The team's early season struggles lead to the firing of David Fizdale

Steve Mills and Scott Perry met with players in the days leading up to David Fizdale's firing to discuss why the team was struggling. Fizdale's performance was brought up in those meetings, according to SNY.

Knicks players held a players-only meeting the day after a blowout loss to the Nuggets to discuss the need to improve their play in order to save Fizdale's job. Players were reportedly optimistic that they could turn their performance around under Fizdale.

Fizdale would be fired later that day following practice.
