Two Kings Plan To Opt Out

May 25, 2005 10:08 AM

Sacramento Kings players Darius Songaila and Cuttino Mobley plan to opt out of their contracts and become free agents.

However, both would like to return to the team.

Songalia's agent,Mark Bartelstein, wants to test the market and get a raise for his client.

"If had to guess, that's what would happen," Bartelstein said of Songaila testing the market. "He loves it in Sacramento, thinks the world of (coach) Rick (Adelman), (president of basketball operations) Geoff (Petrie) and the coaching staff. If he chooses to opt out, it's nothing against Sacramento. He just sees the value of a (new) contract."

Mobley announced on Fox Sports Net on Friday that he was opting out but would also like to return.

"I would love to play for Sacramento again, but I'm going to have the opportunity to opt out," Mobley said on "Best Damn Sports Show Period." "And I think it's best for me, and for my family and for the future of Cuttino."

Kings Contact Jackson

May 6, 2005 11:21 AM

The Sacramento Kings joined the group of teams interested in obtaining the services of Phil Jackson.

After being knocked out in the first round by the Seattle Supersonics, it looks as though the Kings are due for some major changes this summer.

Jackson, even when he was head coach of the Lakers, spoke positively about the Maloof brothers (owners of the Kings).

May 5, 2005 6:15 PM

Geoff Petrie, the Sacramento Kings' president of basketball operations, underwent a procedure to open a blocked artery in his heart just one day after his team was eliminated by Seattle from the playoffs.

Petrie, 57, had an angioplasty to remove the blockage that was found Wednesday after he complained of tightness in his chest while running.

His wife, Anne-Marie, said Petrie complained of discomfort for about three weeks, but put off getting a checkup until after the playoffs.

Mr. Sonic Gives His Team A Rest

May 5, 2005 2:25 PM

Yesterday the Seattle Supersonics players were treated to a rare rest from coach Nate McMillan after winning the Sacramento series in 5 games.

"They had enough motivation already," McMillan said. "Winning is enough motivation. But we could use a day off. They earned it. How we played in this series and the way we responded in this game.

"I just told them to go home, spend the day with your wives or your families, and we'll get back to work tomorrow. I didn't want them to think about basketball for a day. We've earned a chance to kick back a little and relax."

Peja Not Looking For A Trade

May 4, 2005 1:39 PM

The Sacramento Kings dealt Chris Webber to Philadelphia and despite the early exit, Peja Stojakovic now appears content in Northern California.

"I think he's pretty happy," team executive Geoff Petrie said Tuesday evening before Stojakovic assumed his familiar starting role at small forward in the Kings' playoff game against the Seattle SuperSonics and scored 38 points in a 122-118 elimination loss.

"He hasn't said anything to indicate otherwise," Petrie said.

Kings Certainly Did Not Plan On Jerome James

May 2, 2005 11:13 AM

Has any Sonics player in recent memory teased and tantalized his team?s fan base more than C Jerome James?

While other recent playoff contenders have featured the Big Fundamental, the Big Aristotle, and the Big Ticket, the Sonics have just had to make do with a man once nicknamed Big Snacks.

Yet in the first round of the playoffs, James has attacked the post like a man possessed, and it?s paid off to the tune of a 3 games to 1 advantage over the Sacramento Kings in the first round of the playoffs.

The long admonished one has gone right at Brian Skinner and a hobbled Brad Miller with impunity, backing his man down and assaulting him with a bevy of jumpers, baby hooks, dunks, and layups off the glass.

Jerome James unexpectedly carrying the sonics to first round victories

Each game has brought another surprise from the big man, along with new career playoff in three consecutive games.

The result?  Over a four game span, Jerome James is averaging 18.7 PPG on 57.1 FG%.  Compare that to the recent performance of superstar C Shaquille O?Neal, who during a four game sweep of the New Jersey Nets averaged 18.2 PPG on 50.9 FG%.

Allen Goes For 45; Sonics Poised To Advance

May 2, 2005 2:21 AM

It was the ?Ray Allen Show? Sunday evening in Sacramento.  The soon-to-be free agent had a career night to lift the Seattle Supersonics to victory 115-102 and a 3-1 lead over the Kings.

With Seattle trailing most of the game it seemed inevitable that the Kings would tie up the series, the Kings were hot from the field and the Sactown crowd was noisy.  But it was Allen who constantly provided the Sonics with the lift they needed hitting clutch shot after clutch shot to stave the Kings attempts to pull away.

Jerome James continued his torrid playoff run and move toward a hefty free-agent contract by scoring 17 points in the win.

Peja Stojakovic led Sacramento with 27 points, but didn't have a point in the first 11 minutes of the fourth quarter.  The Kings had the game but could not put the Sonics away.

The Sonics can now clinch the series in Seattle with game 5 set to take place on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Kings Coach Adelman Upset With Physical Play Of Sonics

May 1, 2005 3:05 PM

Rick Adelman is fed up with what he perceives to be too much aggression and too much acting on the side of the Supersonics in the Kings best of 7 playoff series with the winners of the Northwest division.

"I tell you, we've looked at all three games, and it's going to the league," Adelman said after the Kings' workout Saturday. "It's too consistent. They've allowed too much to happen. It's ridiculous what they're allowing to happen. ... After three games, someone should look at that, and when the officials come in here (for Game 4), they should be aware of that."

While Adelman is busy looking at tapes of perceived fouls and flops the Sonics have gone up 2-1 in the series.
