Kawhi Leonard, Spurs End Extension Talks

Oct 31, 2014 2:33 PM

Kawhi Leonard and the San Antonio Spurs have broken off talks on a contract extension.

Agent Brian Elfus and Leonard have held firm on their desire for a maximum contract extension, something Spurs management won’t consider until July.

“We feel Kawhi is deserving of a max contract, and we are disappointed that something couldn’t get done,” Elfus told Yahoo Sports. “There’s no debating Kawhi’s value. The market has been set. He’s done everything the Spurs have asked of him, exceeded all of their expectations. Coach [Gregg] Popovich has gone out of his way to call Kawhi the future face of the franchise. We have great respect for the Spurs organization, but here, we simply agree to disagree.

“There will be no shortage of teams interested in Kawhi’s services next year. There will be a lot of contract scenarios available to us, and we will explore them all.”

San Antonio could sign Leonard to a five-year, $90 million-plus extension now or next summer, if the Spurs are willing to make him their designated player. But Leonard could also sign an offer sheet with a rival team that includes a player option in the third season that would allow him to potentially leave the Spurs in 2017.

Sources say the Spurs want to keep Leonard's contract off the books until they can explore free agent targets, especially since Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili could retire.

Leonard would have a significantly smaller cap hold than what would be the first season of a max or near-max extension.

Gasol: Picking Bulls Over Spurs, Thunder Was Most Difficult Decision Of My Life

Oct 30, 2014 11:14 AM

The New York Knicks pursued Pau Gasol in the offseason, but they didn't have the cap space or title contender status that he was looking for.

Choosing between the Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder was "probably the most difficult decision that I made in my career and in my life," Gasol said.

"I considered it," Gasol said of the Knicks. "But I thought the team was not at the level of others, other contenders and options that I had. I'm coming down to my last few years of my career, and I want to maximize them. And it was difficult to leave L.A. in the first place. But now I feel like I'm in a great position, and we have a great opportunity, and now let's see if we're lucky and we deserve to do something special."

Gasol had 21 points and 11 rebounds in the Bulls' opener against the Knicks.

"Plays where you need a great shot and you know that anything isn't rolling for you, you can easily dump it down and space out," Rose said. "If you double-team, it's going to be a wide-open shot, a wide-open three. … It makes the game easy for everyone."

Leonard, Spurs Not Progressing On Extension As He Pursues Max Deal

Oct 27, 2014 8:14 AM

Kawhi Leonard is holding firm on his desire for a maximum contract, and extension talks with the San Antonio Spurs have failed to gather traction despite a looming Friday deadline, according to sources.

No progress has been made despite discussions for weeks.

Multiple league executives believe he'll command a max offer sheet on the market next summer.

Leonard has missed the preseason with an eye infection and is unlikely to be in the lineup on Tuesday for the Spurs opening night game against Dallas.

Kawhi Leonard To Miss Rest Of Preseason With Eye Infection

Oct 18, 2014 7:39 PM

Kawhi Leonard’s right eye infection has spread to his left eye and he will miss the remainder of the pre-season schedule.

The regular season opener against the Dallas Mavericks would appear to be up in the air for Leonard, according to a timetable for his recovery by Gregg Popovich.

“Kawhi Leonard is still out, for 10 more days,” Popovich said. “(The infection) is going back and forth between the two (eyes). It’s crazy.”

Popovich Fires Back At Sarver Apologizing To Phoenix Crowd For Spurs' Absent Players

Oct 18, 2014 7:37 PM

Gregg Popovich responded Saturday to Robert Sarver, who grabbed a mic late in Thursday’s exhibition game to apologize to the Phoenix Suns' home crowd after five San Antonio Spurs players missed the game.

“As I said, the silliness begins," Popovich said. "Most wise individuals would check facts before they made statements. Unless you’re interested in putting on a show. In that case, the facts get in your way, as in this case.

“We had five guys we didn’t send: Patty Mills had a shoulder operation. Tiago Splitter has been out the whole preseason. Kawhi Leonard was out and is still out for 10 more days. The other two, Duncan and Ginobili, are two of the oldest guys in the league who just came back from a 13-day European trip.

“The only thing that surprises me is that he didn’t say it in a chicken suit. I’ll just leave it at that.”

Boris Diaw Has $500,000 In Bonuses For Keeping Weight Off

Oct 10, 2014 4:48 PM

Boris Diaw has a weight clause in his contract with the San Antonio Spurs in which he will earn bonuses of as much as $500,000.

Diaw will receive $150,000 for weighing less than or equal to 254 pounds on Oct. 25 and again on the first Tuesday after the All-Star Game and again on April 1.

Those three dates give Diaw an incentive to be in shape for the start of the regular season, the post-All-Star stretch and for the final push before the playoffs.
