Utah's Boozer, Okur Game-Time Decisions

Nov 30, 2007 5:08 PM

Jazz forward Carlos Boozer and center Mehmet Okur both sat out the pregame shootaround and will wait until they warm up before Friday night's game to decide if they'll be able to play against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Boozer, the NBA's third-leading scorer, suffered a sprained right ankle in the second quarter of Wednesday's victory over Philadelphia. He did say the swelling has gone down the last 48 hours. "Just trying to get that pain out of there," Boozer said.

Boozer played the entire second half of the Sixers game on the bad ankle. Okur, however, left the game in the third quarter with back spasms and did not return, although he came back from the locker room to watch from the bench in the fourth quarter.

Okur has been alternating between ice and heat treatments the last two days. He said, "I feel a lot better now but not 100 percent." Boozer went for X-rays, and Okur for an MRI exam Thursday that came back negative for more serious injuries.

Kirilenko Feels 'Much Better' About Situation

Nov 27, 2007 1:48 PM

Andrei Kirilenko was asked about his summer of discontent prior to the Jazz's 113-109 loss at New York on Monday and shed some light on just where things stand.

"It was tough year last year, and it's been a lot of disappointments for me," the forward from Russia said. "And, you know, in your mind you start just talk to yourself a little bit. It's like, 'Man, it's not everything.' You need to think about basketball, but, you know, in a positive way. Right now, I'm changed completely. I feel way different."

"It's way different," Kirilenko added. "It's way different. I feel much better."

Utah's Williams Misses Shootaround, Will Play

Nov 23, 2007 4:40 PM

Starting point guard Deron Williams did not take part in the Jazz's morning shootaround Friday, but afterward said he does plan to play in tonight's game against the New Orleans Hornets.

Williams played in the Jazz's most recent game, last Monday's win over New Jersey.

On Tuesday, however, he underwent a surgical procedure to address an ingrown nail on his right big toe.

Williams also did not practice Thursday night, and prior to that session, he suggested it was uncertain if he would be able to go tonight.

Jazz Practice Without Five Players

Nov 20, 2007 5:16 PM

The Utah Jazz practiced Tuesday morning without five players.

Point guard Deron Williams was not available because he had surgery for an in-grown toenail on his right big toe. Team podiatrist Dr. Michael Lowe performed the surgery.

Center Mehmet Okur was present at practice but did not participate due to a sore back.

Forward Matt Harpring was limited to rehabilitation work after playing 14 minutes in Monday's game. He had preseason knee surgery, and there's no timetable yet for when he will be able to play without restrictions.

Also, forward Carlos Boozer was allowed to leave to be with his family in Miami?his young son Carmani is recovering from a recent bone marrow transplant ? and Jason Hart was gone for his grandmother's funeral. Hart also missed Monday's 102-75 win over New Jersey at EnergySolutions Arena.

Sloan Not Comfortable With Utah's Bench

Nov 17, 2007 10:22 AM

As Jazz Coach Jerry Sloan is fond of saying, the hardest job in the NBA is coming off the bench. Ten games into the season, Sloan is still trying to figure out how to use his bench players, which he acknowledges hasn't made their job any easier.

"We're still trying to get our guys in a comfort zone so we know who's coming in," Sloan said before the Jazz's five-game winning streak came to an end Friday. "We're not as comfortable there as we'd like to be, but that's the way it is."

Utah May Be Without Harpring Against Toronto

Nov 14, 2007 5:22 PM

The Jazz may be without veteran backup small forward Matt Harpring tonight ? but not because of his surgically repaired right knee.

Rather, the 6-2 Jazz on Wednesday were calling Harpring "doubtful" for tonight's game at Toronto because of an apparent stomach virus.

Harpring traveled with the team for its three-game trip, which also includes stops Friday at Cleveland and Saturday at Indiana. He did not, however, take part in a morning shootaround Wednesday, instead staying back at the Jazz's team hotel.

Harpring did not play in Utah's win over Memphis last Saturday because of swelling in his knee, which twice previously was repaired via microfracture surgery, and this past summer was surgically cleaned of scar tissue.

Sloan Not Impressed With Utah's Start

Nov 12, 2007 5:08 PM

Heading into Sunday's NBA play, the Jazz's 111.1 scoring average this season easily led the league in team points per game ? nearly three full points ahead of the next-closest Los Angeles Lakers.

Only once in seven games so far, in fact, has Utah not surpassed the century mark.

Suffice it to say, however, that Jazz coach Jerry Sloan is anything but overwhelmed by how his offense has played.

"This is a team that has tried to make more acrobatic plays than any team I've ever had," said Sloan, whose 5-2 Jazz host Sacramento tonight. "They're a lot more athletic, probably, and that may be the reason.

"But," he added, "we've made some really difficult passes, and we've turned the ball over a lot ? and you can't afford that."

Jazz Send Rookie Fesenko To D-League

Nov 10, 2007 6:16 PM

The Jazz are expected to send rookie center Kyrylo Fesenko to join the NBA Development League's Utah Flash for the start of training camp today in Orem.

Fesenko went home sick from practice Thursday and did not travel for Friday's game against Seattle. As a result, the Jazz will wait to finalize his D-League assignment until today.

The Jazz can assign Fesenko to the Flash up to three times this season. There are no immediate plans to send fellow rookie Morris Almond to the Flash, although Almond is expected to spend some time in Orem.

LeBron's Triple-Double Bested By Williams' Layup

Nov 8, 2007 6:27 AM

Deron Williams drove the length of the floor for a layup with 1.3 seconds remaining Wednesday night to give the Utah Jazz a 103-101 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, overcoming LeBron James' triple-double and tying 3-pointer just seconds before.

James, who had a triple-double before the end of the third quarter, tied it with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 6 seconds left to play. But before the Cavs could revel in the comeback, Williams was off and running toward the other end and the game-winner.

"We just get it and go. We find that works for us," said Williams, who finished with 15 points. "I think they felt we were going to call a timeout. They're looking back to see what we're doing and while they're doing that we're racing up the court."
