Dee Brown: I Have To Look Around

Jul 30, 2007 9:56 AM

Monday's expected official welcoming of former Utah Valley State guard Ronnie Price has Utah Jazz fans wondering what will now happen to Dee Brown, who spent last season as Utah's No. 3 point but now appears No. 4 on a three-man list.

Brown, a restricted free agent who did not sign a qualifying offer from the Jazz because he wanted it guaranteed, addressed the question of his own future on his Web site over the weekend.

"Now with this qualifying offer on the table along with two point guards signed (including Jason Hart, signed a few weeks ago), I have to look around the league and find a team that is interested in me, a solid point guard," Brown wrote.

"My agent will definitely see what's out there for me, now that Utah made it clear that they want to move in a different direction. I really feel like the Jazz organization is looking for something else and going in a different direction as far as the guard position goes."

Brown also said he had hoped to return to Utah ? the Jazz haven't publicly ruled it out yet ? and thought he'd played well in the Rocky Mountain Revue.

"I felt like Utah was the perfect fit for me because it's a city that has great fans, great tradition and teammates and fans that love me, and I love them back," Brown said. "But again it's a business."

R. Brewer's Hamstring Still Hurting

Jul 28, 2007 12:56 PM

Henry Thomas is the agent for shooting guard Ronnie Brewer, also going into his second season, and he indicated Friday that Brewer is still hurting from the hamstring pull that kept him out of most of the Rocky Mountain Revue that concluded July 20. Brewer aggravated an earlier hamstring injury in the first practice of the Revue, played 20 minutes in the first game before twisting an ankle and didn't play again.

"It's coming along," Thomas said of Brewer's hamstring. "It's unfortunately not where it needs to be. He was, of course, very disappointed he was unable to participate in the Revue."

Thomas said teammate Carlos Boozer, who missed a whole year due to a hamstring, "has shared that with Ronnie.

"Those are tough injuries. I think he just wants to be real careful right now. I agree. I think the team agrees ? not make it a worse situation than it is. I think the thing to do now is to be smart in terms of rehabbing it and making sure he gets it back to 100 percent," Thomas said.

Miles' Agent Optimistic He'll Re-Sign With Jazz

Jul 27, 2007 1:01 PM

Second-year shooting guard C.J. Miles confounded much of Utah, perhaps including Jazz officials, by not participating in last week's Rocky Mountain Revue, which is designed to give young players extra playing time.

But Miles' agent seems optimistic the 21-year-old restricted free agent, who has yet to sign the Jazz's qualifying offer tendered July 1, will be back in a Jazz uniform come October.

"Yeah, I'm guessing he'd be back there," said agent Billy Ceisler by telephone Thursday.

"They've told us on many occasions how highly they regard his talent now and what they think he could be in the future. They've invested two years, and they've definitely treated him terrifically, and I think he's a nice part of the organization.

"His teammates and him get along terrifically, and it's a great team to be a part of. They have great up-and-coming talent, and he feels like he could make an impact next year and contend for the starting two-guard job and, instead of only starting the first 13 games of the year, hold onto it for the entire season," said Ceisler, whose other clients include Milwaukee's Charlie Villanueva and "Smush" Parker, who was with the Los Angeles Lakers last season.

Ceisler said Miles stayed out of the Revue, in which he played the last two summers, for fear of injury. "It's very rare for a restricted free agent with C.J.'s upside to play summer league, risk serious injury, when he's got 15-20 years in his career to play in the NBA," Ceisler said.

Price A Sign That Brown Is Leaving?

Jul 27, 2007 10:57 AM

Utah's hunt for a third point guard took a surprising turn Thursday morning, when former Utah Valley star Ronnie Price agreed to sign a multi-year contract.

The addition of Price means popular second-year point Dee Brown will not return to Utah, although vice president of basketball operations Kevin O'Connor declined to comment on the situation until Price passes a physical.

Price averaged 24.3 points as a senior at Utah Valley. He was not drafted by an NBA team, but spent the last two seasons in Sacramento after signing with the Kings as a free agent.

Last season, the 24-year-old Price averaged 3.5 points and just under one assist in limited playing time for Sacramento.

"He was a sensational athlete for us at Utah Valley and, after two years in the NBA, he's still a sensational athlete," said Dick Hunsaker, Price's college coach. "That's a dimension - an ingredient - the Jazz could be looking for."

O'Connor Says Magloire Wasn't Offered Deal

Jul 17, 2007 10:18 AM

Jazz basketball boss Kevin O'Connor on Monday refuted a New Jersey newspaper report saying Utah had offered a two-year contract to center Jamaal Magloire, the 2004 NBA All-Star who recently agreed to terms on a one-year, $4 million contract with the Nets.

"Magloire," the Newark (N.J.) Star-Ledger reported Sunday, "wants to be more than just a thug for hire, which is why he passed up two-year offers from Washington, Philly and Utah."

"Incorrect," said O'Connor, the Jazz's basketball operations senior vice president. "Big-time incorrect."

O'Connor described the Jazz's contact with Magloire's camp as "very, very minimal," and said "there was never an offer."

According to Monday's Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia general manager Billy King also "denied a published report that he had made a (two)-year offer" to Magloire.

Fisher Returning To Lakers, Agrees To Deal

Jul 13, 2007 1:25 AM

The Lakers have gone to their past in hopes that it will help solidify their immediate future in the backcourt.

Point guard Derek Fisher, who played an integral role on the Lakers' three-peat team earlier this decade, has agreed in principle to a three-year contract, the Los Angeles Times reports. The deal is worth roughly $14 million.

"That position has been something that we identified as an area where we felt we needed to improve," Mitch Kupchak told the Times. "Not a slight to Jordan [Farmar] and our drafted rookie [Javaris Crittenton], who's just 19 years old, but at 19 and 20 years old with limited NBA experience, we're not going to think that they're going to be the ones that can lead the team next year.

"Having said that, without naming players that are out there, when we have additional information and we have an announcement, we'll make that announcement. Right now, we're not in that position, but we're getting close."

Fisher, 32, must clear waivers after the Jazz files paperwork to terminate his contract, a process that likely won't be completed until next week.

Kevin O'Connor, the Jazz's senior vice president of basketball operations, was positive about Fisher's departure.

"We wish him the best, and I hope four games a year he doesn't play well against us," O'Connor told The Salt Lake Tribune.

Fisher Placed On Waivers

Jul 12, 2007 9:05 PM

Jazz officials have confirmed to RealGM that guard Derek Fisher was placed on waivers on Thursday.

He will remain on waivers for seven days and theoretically could be claimed by another club, which is extremely unlikely given the special circumstances.

Fisher has agreed in principle to sign a three-year deal with the Lakers.
