Suns To Propose Significant Deal To Gordon Hayward; Jazz Plan To Match Offer Sheets

Jun 29, 2014 10:31 PM

The Utah Jazz plan to match offer sheets for Gordon Hayward, a restricted free agent.

Hayward is expected to receive a significant offer sheet, possibly the maximum contract, from the Phoenix Suns, according to sources.

The Jazz have extended a qualifying offer to Hayward. Dennis Linsey has said he hopes to keep Hayward.

Hayward developed a strong relationship with Suns coach Jeff Hornacek during the first three seasons of his career when the former Jazz shooting guard was a shooting coach and assistant.

Dante Exum, Agent Didn’t Think He’d Fall To Jazz At No. 5

Jun 26, 2014 10:53 PM

Dante Exum didn’t expect to still be on the board when the Utah Jazz were on the clock with the fifth overall pic. Exum didn’t work out for the Jazz leading up to the draft.

“Looking at the draft and where I was placed, me and my agent thought that I wouldn’t get down to five,” Exum admitted. "Anything happens in the draft, and you see I’m lucky enough that Utah believed in me and picked me up at five.”

Exum will play alongside Trey Burke, who the Jazz selected in the lottery just a year ago. Exum believes his previous experience will help him work well alongside another lead guard.

“The Australian team has Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova, and I’m in that system, and those are both point guards. So you work around it.

“I already spoke to [coach Quin Snyder] and he’s excited to have me,” Exum said. “I’m excited to be there. I know we’re both going to give up something a little so everyone’s happy."

Smart: Decision Not To Workout For Jazz Came From Agent

Jun 25, 2014 6:38 PM

The Utah Jazz did background work on Marcus Smart and have interest in taking him with the fifth overall pick on Thursday night, but the team was never able to get him in for a workout.

Reports have indicated that Smart and his agent, Lee Melchionni, have been trying to make sure he doesn’t fall past the Orlando Magic at No. 4.

"It was my agent, you've got to talk to my agent about that," Smart said Wednesday when asked about the decision not to work out for Utah. Smart added that he met with some representatives from the Jazz in Chicago during the combine.

"It was a great experience," he said. "We had a great talk, a great conversation. I got to know the coaching staff, the owners and everybody else."

Speculation has been that Smart would prefer to avoid the Jazz because they already have Trey Burke. Burke, also a lead guard, finished third in the voting for the 2014 Rookie of the Year.

“It'd be fine with me,” Smart said of potential playing alongside Burke, "but my agent just told me that we weren’t going to workout for [the Jazz] and that was the end of it.”

The Cavaliers wanted a future unprotected pick, but the Jazz countered with the No. 23 pick. The Jazz are split on whether or not to include Burks.

The Jazz presumably would pick between Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker.
