Grizzlies File Motion To Limit Scope Of Subpoena Over Myles Powell Lawsuit

Jul 27, 2023 12:59 PM

All 30 NBA teams have been sent subpoenas by Seton Hall as they seek a trove of scouting materials and other documents centered on Myles Powell.

Powell is suing Seton Hall, former basketball coach Kevin Willard and its longtime director of sports medicine Tony Testa for gross negligence over their handling of his injury.

The Memphis Grizzlies filed a motion in federal court seeking to quash or limit the scope of the subpoena to “protect its business interests and confidential trade secrets.”

“There exists no good reason to draw Memphis Basketball into a dispute between Seton Hall and a former NCAA basketball player that involves secret text messages, under-the-table pain narcotic administration, and failure to properly diagnose an injury,” the Grizzlies’ motion states, alluding to the allegations Powell has made against Seton Hall.

Powell originally filed his lawsuit against Seton Hall, Willard and Testa in 2021.

Powell blamed injury management for not being selected in the 2020 NBA draft.

The emerging document dispute calls to mind a similar subpoenaing of NBA teams two years ago by AIG, following a lawsuit filed against the insurance giant by former pro basketball player Chandler Parsons.

Bob Huggins Claims He Never Formally Resigned From West Virginia, Could Sue School If Not Reinstated

Jul 9, 2023 2:13 PM

An attorney representing Bob Huggins claimed that his client never formally resigned as the head coach of West Virginia last month following a DUI arrest.

Huggins could sue the school should he not be reinstated as head coach.

West Virginia, who hired assistant Josh Eilert as interim coach following Huggins' supposed resignation, said that they would not reinstate Huggins to his previous role.

Huggins' legal team stated that the former head coach entered rehab last month and intends to return to the team after he completes the program.
