UConn guard Azzi Fudd will miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season after suffering ACL and medial meniscal tears in her right knee, the team announced Wednesday.
Fudd suffered the noncontact injury last week in practice when, according to coach Geno Auriemma, she went up for a shot and afterward remarked that it felt funny. She missed No. 6 UConn's past two games against Maryland and Minnesota, both wins, watching from the bench.
"We're all just so upset for Azzi," Auriemma said in a statement. "She worked hard to be healthy for this season, and it's unfortunate when you put in a lot of hard work and have a setback like this. Azzi loves the game and works tirelessly. I'm confident she'll rehab with the same work ethic and come back better than ever. We'll obviously miss her presence on the court, but Azzi will continue to be a great teammate and important part of this team this season. Our program will support Azzi through her recovery however we can."
Bryce James has transferred back to Sierra Canyon where he played his freshman and sophomore seasons. James will be eligible to play immediately as he didn't compete in any games for Notre Dame this season.
James split time between JV and varsity at Sierra Canyon and tallied 3.8 points per game in 12 varsity appearances for the Trailblazers as a sophomore.
Bronny James warmed up with his USC teammates before a game for the first time this season on Monday.
James suffered cardiac arrest in July during a workout and had surgery to repair a likely congenital heart defect.
James had done individual work before games but had yet to warm up with his teammates before Monday.
LeBron James said earlier this month that should Bronny James pass a medical, he would return to practice with the intention of playing this season.
Tre Johnson announced his commitment to Texas on Wednesday, choosing the Longhorns over Baylor.
Johnson is ranked as the No. 4 player in the ESPN 100 for the 2024 class.
"There's no NBA team in Austin. The fans give great support, and the Moody Center gets loud. I like their culture," said Johnson, who announced his commitment on The Pat McAfee Show.
Texas now has three recruits inside the ESPN top 100 for 2024.
Jayden Quaintance has committed to Kentucky after reclassifying from 2025 to 2024.
Quaintance is the No. 14 player in the ESPN 100.
Because Quaintance just turned 16 in July, he will have to spend two years at Kentucky before entering the NBA draft.
Quaintance averaged 14.5 points and 11.1 rebounds in the Overtime Elite league last season, following it up by averaging 9.9 points and 6.2 rebounds with Team Thad on the Nike EYBL circuit this past spring and summer.
Khani Rooths announced his commitment to Michigan on Sunday.
Rooths, the No. 23 prospect on the ESPN 100 for the 2024 class, picked Michigan over Georgia and Florida State.
Rooths is Michigan's highest-ranked recruit since 2021.
"They have had players like me drafted at the wing position. I know this is a great opportunity for me to play at Michigan," said Rooths.
Bronny James intends to return to practice and play for USC this season if he passes a medical examination later this month.
Bronny suffered cardiac arrest during a team workout in July and underwent successful surgery to repair what the James family referred to as a likely congenital heart defect.
"Things are going in the right direction with Bronny's progress," James said. "He's doing rehab. Every week he gets to do more and more and more. We have a big moment at the end of this month to see if we can continue to go forward. If he's cleared, we'll be not too long away from him being back on the floor and back with his teammates and practicing, with the notion of being back on the floor and playing in game situations."
Before the heart issue, James was a projected first round pick in the 2024 NBA draft.
Five-star center Patrick Ngongba II committed to Duke on Saturday, choosing the Blue Devils over Kansas State and Kentucky.
"I chose Duke because it felt like home. I like their plan for me, and I trust the coaches. It is a place where we can win and help me get to the next level," Ngongba told ESPN.
Ngongba is the No. 19 ranked player in the ESPN 100 for the 2024 class.
Duke, who received a commitment from Cooper Flagg earlier this week, have the top-ranked recruiting class in the country.
UCLA freshman Aday Mara was cleared for competition this upcoming season by the NCAA.
